The province's Special Investigations Unit has confirmed that a teenager is dead and a Niagara Regional Police officer is in hospital after they fell over the Niagara Gorge.
Police say it all began shortly after 5 Tuesday afternoon when the officer was chasing a man in the area of River Road, between Otter and Eastwood Streets.
The two men ended up going over a retaining wall and into the gorge.
It's estimated they fell about 20 or 30 metres.
Firefighters used rappelling equipment to decend into the gorge and a helicopter was also brought in to assist in the rescue.
The officer was airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton.
There's word he's suffering from a broken leg.
The name of the person who died has not been released, but we do know he was just 16-years-old.
There are reports police had been investigating a fight at a nearby youth home when the chase began.
