The fire marshal has been called in to determine the cause of an early morning house fire in east end Hamilton.
Emergency crews were called just before 1:30 Saturday morning to a two-story duplex at 29 Lincoln Street, in the Barton and Gage Avenue North area.
They found flames spreading to 27 Lincoln and called for additional units.
All occupants were able to escape the fire thanks to the actions of a neighbour who was walking down the street, spotted the fire and called 911 on his cell phone.
He then banged on the doors of both residences to alert the occupants and in the process cut his hand breaking a window.
He was treated on scene by paramedics.
One firefighter suffered a neck injury during search and rescue operations but was treated at hospital and released.
A preliminary estimate puts the damage at over $300,000, not including contents.
