A Hamilton politician says it's the best scenario under a very bad situation.
Councillor Sam Merulla is suggesting that the City of Hamilton seek to purchase the Delta Secondary School property now that the high school has been confirmed for closure by the public school board.
Merulla's vision is that the city create parkland on some of the property, while selling the rest to developers with an eye on turning it into condominiums and perhaps commercial opportunities.
Merulla says it would be a strategic investment, in line with the city's nodes and corridors strategy.
He adds that he's been looking into the idea since first seeing the writing on the wall for Delta about a year ago.
The city must follow a process for purchasing the school ---- which starts with the board declaring the site surplus. A number of other provincial agencies would have then first rights to the land, but Merulla is confident they would quickly be exhausted.
