Because of provincial cuts to social service benefits, Hamilton councillors have decided to cover a 1.8 million dollar budget shortfall.
The emergency and community services committee has voted to cover the cost of discretionary benefits for Ontario Works recipients.
It covers things such as glasses, dental care, and baby supplies for people receiving social assistance.
The move comes after the McGuinty government put a cap on the amount of money it provides for those services.
