At least some Hamilton politicians believe it's time to get tough with residents of apartment buildings and condominiums.
At issue is a waste diversion rate of just 21% in the city's multi-residential buildings compared to 55% in single family homes.
Numbers presented to the public works committee also show that between 2009 and 2011, the percentage of apartments and condominiums that took part in green cart and blue box collection fell from 91% to 69%.
Councillor Lloyd Ferguson says it's time to get tough with those "who aren't getting it".
Staff have been asked to report back next month with a plan to improve the diversion rate in "poorly performing buildings" that uses existing resources.
