Dr. Kevin Smith recommends new hospital in South Niagara
Ted Michaels
5/3/2012

It's time to build a new hospital in South Niagara.

That's the recommendation from Dr. Kevin Smith, the provincially appointed supervisor of the Niagara Health System,

Smith says that, in his opinion, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls and Welland should close to make way for a new facility.

The mayors of those communities will be asked to come up with the best location; a review would include transportation and accessibility.

Smith recommends maternity moving from St. Catharines to the new hospital, but oncology and cardiac departments would remain.

Residents of the affected communties will also have their say, then, the findings will be presented to the health minister.

Smith predicts the process will take six years.
