Building permits on record pace
CHML
4/25/2012

It's been a red hot start to the year for Hamilton's economic development department.

The value of building permits for the first quarter of 2012 totalled 271 million dollars, up by about 75 million compared to the same three months last year.

It's also a pace that would shatter the previous one year record of one billion dollars in building permits, which was set in 2010.

Mild weather conditions this past winter were certainly one helpful factor, but Director of Economic Development Neil Everson says it goes deeper than that.

He notes that a number of major projects have gotten underway, including the first phase of developer Darko Vranich's downtown hotel and condominium project, the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre on Longwood Road and a pair of new WalMart stores, one in the east end and the other at the Flamborough Power Centre.
