Hundreds of people have had to find other accomodations after a three alarm fire demolished a multi story apartment building in Millrise Thursday afternoon.
The fire broke out over the noon hour and quickly spread from the roof area where it is believed to have originated. At the peak of the blaze witnesses reported seeing flames shooting up to 30 metres in the air and thick black smoke billowing above the building. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by high winds.
No injuries were reported, however many residents expressed shock and disbelief with many saying they didn't have insurance.

A three alarm blaze has engulfed a building in the city's deep south. The blaze broke out in a multi-story condo complex over the noon hour, forcing the evacuation of the complex and other nearby buildings. Eye witnesses have reported flames shooting 20 or 30 metres into the air; the roof on the building has collapsed, and thick smoke continues to billow from the building.
Shortly after the fire broke out, transit buses were dispatched to the area to shelter any evacuees. Five pumper trucks and three aerial crews are on the scene, as well as EMS and police.
Global TV's ENG photographer flew above the fire in Chopper One about 1:30 pm and reported being able to see inside the building. As well, Jerry Favero reports pieces of the building were falling as the fire raged. He describes the condominium as a large complex and says the scene is similar to the blaze which levelled several buildings in the Waterford complex in Erlton in 2002.

After 20 years with the zoo, Cathy Gaviller gave notice on Wednesday.
"She leaves lots of friends and close colleagues," said zoo spokesman Simon Scott. "She'll be missed."
Scott says Gaviller's resignation was a personal decision and denies the zoo asked her to leave.
On Monday, Gaviller was interviewed by QR77 about the circumstances surrounding the near escape of a 7 year old gorilla.
The Calgary Zoo has come under sharp criticism because of a series of animal deaths in recent years including dozens of sting rays and a capybara.

The number of property tax appeals filed with the City of Calgary is at its lowest level ever.
Customer service lead Amy Enfield says out of more than 464,000 assessments, appeals will go forward on just over 5,000 - 1.2 per cent.
"We have had a concerted and consistent communications program encouraging customers to inquire with the assessment before filing a complaint," Enfield says.
The deadline to file an appeal of your property tax assessment has passed.
"We're looking to produce fair and equitable assessments," she added. "It's not about fighting City Hall."
In 2008, appeals went forward on 1.8 per cent of total property tax assessments.
City taxes are expected to rise 4.8 per cent this year, or about $50 per household.
