Council calls for audit on West LRT budget

The West LRT is still months away from opening, but calls for an audit on the project's budget are growing louder.

The project was budgeted at a billion dollars, but now stands at 1.4 billion, and today Council's transportation committee had questions over increasing construction costs and a request for 8.6 million dollars in public art. The public art request was denied, with Council members saying no funds will be provided until the policy is fully reviewed.

At th committee said no to art until there's a review of council's art policy.  Meantime, transportation Mac Logan welcomes the calls for an audit once the project is complete. He says given the scope of the project, there are issues as to how the funds were used, and how the decisions were made.

One of the biggest concerns is that 61 million dollars for trenching the LRT under 45th Street SW chewed up much of the project's contingency fund.
