Primeau & Grose: Behind the Scenes

The Poster Child for Idiotic
Posted 9/2/2012 5:12:00 PM

I sat outside an oil change place in Calgary on Friday and listened to Primeau's return to Primeau and Grose. A few minutes in I texted her "Welcome back... you sound great!." She texted back "I miss you." I responded "I miss you too." Primeau went on to make mention of "a long text" she had received and curiosity got the better of me. When I got back to the hotel I logged into our texting page and read the following text:

"Hi Leslie, A few thoughts about your show since Andrew: He is funny and I do enjoy this but he is rude and disrespectful to you. I get the impression he would rather have the show to himself. On the other hand you have become screechy and you play dumb as his straight man (person). I miss your intelligent commentary and interviews when the show was yours alone. When J'lynn sits in for you it is embarrassingly obvious that he is physically attracted to her. On the first show I felt he made inappropriate comments towards and about her. He still does but not as often. Also, when only Morely or College boy are available to cover, the show becomes a sports show and there are far to many of those already on 630! I like you and The Primeau and Gross Show but Andrew is far to large for his britches. "

I was, quite frankly, angry and disgusted by this text. I know I should just let it go but it festered with me for days. Morley Scott and Dave Campbell came to my show on Saturday and after the show we hung out a little and I brought it up to them, They both advised me to forget about it. I couldn't. I have never before seen a text with so many false and idiotic statements in my entire radio career.

Line 1: Hi Leslie, A few thoughts about your show since Andrew:

Lesley (NOT Leslie) had a show before I came along. This is not that show. That show is gone. This is a new show and it is ours.

Line 2: He is funny and I do enjoy this but he is rude and disrespectful to you.

There is no one in the building I respect more than Primeau. She is my partner and my friend and my mentor. I do NOTHING and say NOTHING that she does not completely support. She has a terrific sense of humour and the jabs we take at each other are always very entertaining to us both and are NEVER hurtful.

Line 3: I get the impression he would rather have the show to himself.

NOT IN A MILLION YEARS! I have made it very very clear to everyone that I only want to do the show with Primeau. I have made it very very clear I have no interest what-so-ever in having my own show. The only reason I want to be able to do a show on my own is so my partner can take a vacation from time to time.

Line 4 & 5: On the other hand you have become screechy and you play dumb as his straight man (person). I miss your intelligent commentary and interviews when the show was yours alone.

Lesley is far from dumb. She's one of the smartest most opinionated people I know. She is definitely smart enough to know what works on the show and confident enough to allow herself to be a straight man from time to time because she's working with a comedian. One of the greatest toughest roles to play properly in comedy is the straight man and Lesley does it brilliantly. Again... it is a different show. We are not a late evening, hard hitting, major news story program. We are entertainment for your drive home.

Line 6,7 & 8: When J'lynn sits in for you it is embarrassingly obvious that he is physically attracted to her. On the first show I felt he made inappropriate comments towards and about her. He still does but not as often.

This is the line I find most offensive. I am in no way what-so-ever attracted to J'lyn (NOT J'lynn). She has been a family friend for many years dating back to her days at Global. I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world who is the mother of 2 of my children and to suggest I have ever in any way come on to J'Lyn or any other woman in the 20 years I've been married to her is an insult to her and to me and is one of the most idiotic statements I have ever read in a text. This listener should be ashamed of herself.

Line 9: Also, when only Morely or College boy are available to cover, the show becomes a sports show and there are far to many of those already on 630!

There wasn't a single show where Morley or Dan filled in where we talked sports for more than 5 minutes. Not a single one. We make a point of NEVER talking sports. Once again... completely idiotic and misinformed statement.

Line 10: I like you and The Primeau and Gross Show but Andrew is far to large for his britches.

My name is spelled Grose NOT Gross. If you're going to completely slander someone and suggest they are plotting against their partner and cheating on their wife have the decency to get the name right. Every day that I get through a show on my own without Lesley I thank God for helping me get through it. Too big for my britches? I consider it a great honour and responsibility to be on the air with a station as great as CHED and I take that responsibility very seriously. I wake up every day and can't believe I have that job.

You, ma'am, are sadly and pathetically misinformed. But thank you for taking the time to listen to the show you "like" and for writing the garbage about me that you did.

Andrew, you are right to be very angry and I don't blame you in the least. I hope by this blog you have purged some of that anger. Remember, you are now and have been since joining Leslie, a "public figure". And as such, you're going to find some that plainly just don't like you. Let it go Andrew, or it'll just inhibit your interaction with leslie, on the show and us listening. Some people just like to try and make others miserable with their sick thoughts and have nothing better to do with their time.

I totally commend you for your reply to this blog. I have to comment that since Bill and Bill left the station many years ago, we have been waiting in vain for a show that would have us once again, laughing out loud in our vehicle while we are driving alone (and looking like idiots - but eventually we realized that the guy laughing in the next car was listening to the same show.) We finally found another show like that, it is yours and Lesley's/ You've brought the fun back in the ride home, and sometimes we have to sit in the car until you are done on a particular rant. We love you both and we love you both mostly together. Congrats guys - you have a great show
