Primeau & Grose: Behind the Scenes

A Moment of Truth
Posted 7/19/2012 2:21:00 PM

On yesterdays show J'Lyn Nye and I were discussing body image and how it has affected girls as young as 5. The conversation turned to women in general and I made the comment that a woman's fear of weighing herself has never made sense to me. It's just a number. J'Lyne, who has recently been trying on wedding dresses, went off on it and opened up about how she felt to be a certain dress size and why it wasn't just a number. I sat back and listened. It was the best bit of radio I've been involved with in quite some time. It was honest. It was from the heart. It moved me.

We were suddenly flooded with texts like "You go girl!" and "Preach it J'Lyne." When she was done and we had thrown to a break she started to apologise and I stopped her. There was absolutely nothing to be sorry for. It was great. I love when talk radio is honest and emotional. It becomes so interesting to listen to and it sheds light on a topic like no other medium can.

It also made me feel like J'Lyne had finally joined me unconditionally as a partner. She wasn't following my lead. She was leading and I loved it.

I'm really sorry I missed it!! The ONE show I didn't listen to... darnit. I don't suppose the shows are archived in any way?? I would have loved to hear what J'Lyn (and Andrew, of course) had to say on the subject.

J'Lyne's experience with wedding dresses rings true for many of us. I have always been a "sturdy gal" as my for-obvious-reasons-ex-husband used to call me and now even in my 50's I struggle to accept who I am and what I look like. Right from my early development men have never been shy about commenting and it didn't matter if they knew me or not. Women and girls often face years of rude and unsolicited comments, the media demands perfection and even in the business world women fare better if they're attractive. So very sad.
