As most of you have now figured out... I run the show on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On those days I pick the topic, update the website, post on Facebook, do the research into the story, and operate the board during the show. Those are my favourite days on the show because, believe it or not, I find them easier to do. Knowing what we're going to talk about, being comfortable in my knowledge of the topic, and being responsible for the pace of the show reduces my stress.
As I've said before, it's not always easy to find a great topic. Sometimes it's so obvious that it sits up and smacks you in the face like a breaking news story but those don't happen every day. Other times it's a topic you just know people will have an opinion on like what we should call Capital Ex but you can't do that every day. Occasionally the topic finds us instead like what the heck is the God particle?
Today I had to laugh after I chose the topic. I read an interesting study about work place stress. There's been some interesting research that suggests most people suffer from it and that it's quite avoidable. Perfect. Most people should be able to relate to the topic and have an opinion. Most people can benefit from listening to the show. Most people will find our take on it entertaining.
Then it hit me. I can't think of anyone who's more stressed at work than Primeau and I. Even when the show is going perfectly we're on the verge of it coming off the rails and both of us are constantly multi-tasking as the show goes on. I actually did an interview with a newspaper about the Festival during a commercial break yesterday while Primeau worked on scheduling for INews880. During the next break I had a conference call with River Cree Casino about Jay Mohr while Primeau answered emails about vacations. When we came back neither of us knew if Kingston had both male and female prisoners but I definitely knew how much tickets will be for Jay Mohr and when I can go camping this summer.
We are exactly the people that we're trying to help. When the show's done today I may just pour myself a drink and listen to it.
