Tencer on Canucks
Posted 1/21/2010 4:00:00 PM
I've never received more e-mails on a subject than I have following my comments regarding the Vancouver Canucks last night. Before I address them further, here's the 51 seconds of controversy from "Overtime Openline" on January 20th. The other voice you hear briefly is that of my co-host, Bob Stauffer:

It just seems to me that for some reason, despite having never won a Championship, despite achieving nothing other than constant mediocrity for the entire existence of the franchise, the Vancouver Canucks and their fans are cocky. I mean, in the 14 seasons since their Cup run in 1994, the Canucks have won a grand total of 4 playoff series. Prior to that run, they had won a total of 5. All in, it's 12 playoff series wins in 38 years.

Oh, wow!

So, if you want to ignore the Glory Years of the Oilers, Habs and Leafs, OK. If you want to ignore the Flames' success in the 80's, OK. The Canucks have just NEVER...NEVER...had anything that should lead to a franchise and fan base that has become as seemingly self-entitled as Vancouver.

After last night's game, in which the Canucks were the benefactors of some calls that were at best marginal and at worst brutal, my frustration took over. Frustration that for the week leading up to the game, the Canucks and their fans were up in arms over a so-called screw job in a game against Nashville. Apparently the whining and complaining worked, as the 2 young officials gave them back the points they felt were robbed from them last week.

To finish, I'll quote a portion of a blog that Toronto Star columnist Damian Cox wrote earlier this month:

Funny how people are so ready to believe Alex Burrows, and so ready to assume Stephane Auger essentially cheated the Vancouver Canucks.

Come to think of it, funny how it's always the Canucks screaming outrage about something. Unless, of course, its a Vancouver fan shining a laser into the face of an opposing goalie. Then, in the words of Alain Vigneault, they're just "great fans."

They sure get unhinged in a hurry over hockey in Vancouver. Geez, years later, you can still get folks all up in a lather over the Bertuzzi-Moore incident, claiming Steve Moore deserved what he got and how he faked his injuries, etc.

Never much moderation out of B.C. when it comes to these things.

Just last summer, Canucks GM Mike Gillis accused the Leafs not once but twice of illegally meddling in Vancouver team business. The NHL essentially laughed and went on to other business.

Now Burrows and his accusations against Auger, which have many in Vancouver screaming that justice must be done, how this proves referees carry grudges and how Auger should be thrown out of the sport.

You're an idiot! You're comments are about as pathetic and whinny as the comments you are whining about!

Consistent mediocrity? 3 division titles in the last 5 years is mediocrity? When was the last time the Oilers won a division title? How about 23 years ago? Enjoy the view from the basement, sucker! Then again you're used to it by now.

You sir, are a douche. Your bias towards the Oilers and hatred of the Canucks has ruined any objectivity you might have possessed. Enjoy the blissful ignorance that retardation has bestowed upon you. Cheers.

Wow and the Edmonton Oilers won a championship 20 years ago? Congratulations, at least we can win the division. If Edmonton was so busy thinking of how great it would be to have Gretzky and Coffey back then maybe you could do something besides sign a bunch of useless players. Have fun paying 5.5 million dollars for Horcoff.

Dan Tencer You are a complete tool box of a douchebag. You're pathetic. The Canucks didn't get 2 points handed to them because of the officiating..... The Canucks beat the Oilers because they are the worst team in the league. Why don't you whine about that???? Why don't you make excuses why your team isn't a glory team anymore?

You're an idiot. I know you aren't going to post any comments like the one I'm submitting now, but what has Edmonton done in the past 10 years? Pronger is the only reason they came close to anything in the playoffs. The next season he left. Crappy team. Just look at them thus far this year. Additionally, if any of these things happened to anyone in Edmonton, your tone would be completely changed. Journalists like you is what makes me hate journalism, my choice in education. Also, the fact that you had to back up your opinion with a supremely better journalist's opinion proves your unprofessionalism. "It's not just me. Look everyone. I'm not the only one. Jump on my bandwagon and like me." Have fun with your bandwagon of general assumptions.

The Oilers can thank their success in the 80's to the WHA. By circumventing the draft the Oilers were able to stack their team but when the 80s ended and their superstars times had passed they became one of the poorest teams in the NHL, a trend we see continued today.

Sure burrows is a pest but he has more goals than any Edmonton oiler so he is doing something right. As for the whineist team lol, edmonton makes up excuses for there losses.Dan your not in a position to talk about the canucks and burrows when your team is making excuses for why they are at the bottom of the league. BTW your team hasnt won anything since the gretzky era.

Using another team's whining to justify your own seems suspect. What does having won in the past have to do with the right to be upset about horrible refereeing? I'm a Canucks fan, saw last night's game, and agree that you lost on a crap call. Now you're whining about it, just like Canuck fans did last week when the same thing happened to us. Why is your whining more justified? Just admit that you were more angry with the refereeing and leave other teams out of it. Burrows didn't bitch about the history if hockey in Nashville after his incident, he went after the refs. Perhaps you should think about doing the same.

I have never heard so much crap come out of one persons mouth in my life. I am a New Jersey fan (have been for many years), and so far the facts lean more towards Burrow's side of the story. It's funny you label the Canucks a bunch of whiners, since from the interviews and statements I have read over the years that involved this team, their was just as much whining as any other team. So stop being such a shit disturber, just so you can get more hits on your stupid little website.

I bet you're happy covering the worst team in the league. We have something to complain about, you're just whining because you don't get to cover a better team.

I love it when people, who seem so sure of themselves, are so totally wrong. How many of the Oiler's star players, during the dynasty, were drafted by the team? Look it up before you start spewing crap.

Your right Canuck fans every young Hockey player dreams of winning the North West Division. What an amazing accomplishment. Even if you choke in the playoffs year after year at least you have that division title to hang your hat on. Better than the Oilers? In 100 years from now do you think anyone will remember that in 2010 the Vancouver Canucks won more games than the Oilers?? No. History only remembers the teams that win it all. So that's why the Oilers are a Historic franchise and the Canucks are well a team in the NHL that has annoying fans.

It just justifies your point Dan, you say "Canucks" anywhere in B.C and they all become experts and quick to go on the defence. Canuck fans will always say that "We are better than the Oilers" and bring up useless facts to use as "banners". Well you can't put statistics on banners and hang them from the rafters can you Vancouver. Keep up the good work Dan, just be carful that the "canuck secret police" don't catch up to you and wag their finger in outrage.

As an Oiler fan, i agree with all the Dan Tencer haters. Oilers suck, lets face it... May as well suck the rest of the season and get last place in the league and we'll get first pick next year.

i find it funny to come on here and see so many canuck fans harping an edmonton based reporter and site. If this didnt bug every canuck fan to the core, there wouldn't be so much of the Canuck crap im reading in these replies. the focus here is on the Canucks and their history of bogus claims. if Bobby Lu and the sisters were done for the year the canucks wouldn't be so hot themselves. you lose your top player and no. 1 , what do you expect. same goes for the worst team in the NHL, who lost Cam Ward to injury awhile back. the only thing i can say today is until Vancouver even comes close to '94, then speak up, just remember you guys were bottom feeders once to, and what goes around comes around and heres hoping to Laraque coming back home

Woo hoo Canucks! You rock! Burrows rocks too! Oilers...not so much (although I do feel for Pat Quinn; he's a great guy but his team is not gonna be hoisting the cup this season. Cheers!

Nice post Dan. I guess the truth hurts. Oiler fan here, yeah we suck, hopefully we suck enough to get a great player in the draft. Its all part of the cycle. I would love to see the so called faithfull stick around is Luo and one of the Sedins were done for the year. I still watch every game. Not like the fairweather fans on the westcoast. Atleast with our cycle at the top we won. Congrats on the div titles. What does that get you? You can hang that beside your 7th Man Banner. You want to talk about a joke..thats a joke.

wow, to all those canuck fans who are commenting on this about edmonton fans and more specifically, dan, being whiners. we have the right to whine when we lose the game because of a DIVE that resulted in a power play for the canucks. you guys all whined about the officiating in the nashville game, and we cant even whine the slightest bit about a brutal call without being pounced on? why dont you all go have fun looking at your division title banners and us edmonton fans will go have fun drinking out of our five stanley cups.
