Tencer on Canucks
Posted 1/21/2010 4:00:00 PM
I've never received more e-mails on a subject than I have following my comments regarding the Vancouver Canucks last night. Before I address them further, here's the 51 seconds of controversy from "Overtime Openline" on January 20th. The other voice you hear briefly is that of my co-host, Bob Stauffer:
It just seems to me that for some reason, despite having never won a Championship, despite achieving nothing other than constant mediocrity for the entire existence of the franchise, the Vancouver Canucks and their fans are cocky. I mean, in the 14 seasons since their Cup run in 1994, the Canucks have won a grand total of 4 playoff series. Prior to that run, they had won a total of 5. All in, it's 12 playoff series wins in 38 years.
Oh, wow!
So, if you want to ignore the Glory Years of the Oilers, Habs and Leafs, OK. If you want to ignore the Flames' success in the 80's, OK. The Canucks have just NEVER...NEVER...had anything that should lead to a franchise and fan base that has become as seemingly self-entitled as Vancouver.
After last night's game, in which the Canucks were the benefactors of some calls that were at best marginal and at worst brutal, my frustration took over. Frustration that for the week leading up to the game, the Canucks and their fans were up in arms over a so-called screw job in a game against Nashville. Apparently the whining and complaining worked, as the 2 young officials gave them back the points they felt were robbed from them last week.
To finish, I'll quote a portion of a blog that
Toronto Star columnist Damian Cox wrote earlier this month:
Funny how people are so ready to believe Alex Burrows, and so ready to assume Stephane Auger essentially cheated the Vancouver Canucks.
Come to think of it, funny how it's always the Canucks screaming outrage about something. Unless, of course, its a Vancouver fan shining a laser into the face of an opposing goalie. Then, in the words of Alain Vigneault, they're just "great fans."
They sure get unhinged in a hurry over hockey in Vancouver. Geez, years later, you can still get folks all up in a lather over the Bertuzzi-Moore incident, claiming Steve Moore deserved what he got and how he faked his injuries, etc.
Never much moderation out of B.C. when it comes to these things.
Just last summer, Canucks GM Mike Gillis accused the Leafs not once but twice of illegally meddling in Vancouver team business. The NHL essentially laughed and went on to other business.
Now Burrows and his accusations against Auger, which have many in Vancouver screaming that justice must be done, how this proves referees carry grudges and how Auger should be thrown out of the sport.

All I have to say is well done Dan, you hit the nail on the head! The responses from the canuck swarm only stands to prove your point about how tasteless, classless, and obnoxious this organization and there fans are. No wonder they made Spikes's top ten most annoying fans in sport. All of Dan's points are also mention there.

One thing the Canucks have that the Oilers lack is a city UFA's want to live in. I know the salary cap was supposed to even the playing field, but unfortunately it didn't relocate Edmoton farther away from the Arctic Circle. The Oilers from here on out better draft well and enjoy having player around before the player earn their right to UFA status and get the hell out of that crappy town as fast as they can (see Pronger, Chris)

Dan i totally agree with alot of your comments. Vancouver seems to be getting alot of maedia hype like toronto does. We as western canadians are mired by the toronto shadow of the west.,a.k.a vancouver. God vancouver fans, your franchise has done nothing to be considered important by any meens. Sure you have the sedin sisters. Yeah, that will get u a cup.Damn wannabes!

Myself, I am from Edmonton, but has moved to the westcoast. Over that time Pocklington sold my heart away from what a great team the Oilers were. After being in Vancouver for te 94 cup run, really put my heart into this team and have grown to like them. Over the years growing and maturing by watching this sport, you learn to pick up things.... It has come to the point that the NHL has been fine tuned now and all you see is the bad calls. I watched every playoff game/series and you can pretty much say that a ref has had the control over a team, game or even the series. Now that all of this has come to light because Burrow's did the unmentionable by telling the media about really bad, biased reffing that is going on!! Dont sit here and bager me cause I'm a Cannot's fan & im a whinner cuz I'm from Van!! I've watched many times the Oilers get the big ol' middle finger & the shaft up the......well you know where, same with the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Sens and Flames!! Now just because after his comment, everyone is now paying attention to what the ref's do when the Canucks are in town. Next time you are at a game in Rexall or who ever is reading this across Canada, watch the officiating anyways!! You will truely see how bad it is. Its biased & corrupt!! I do beleive the League picks its champs!! Watch, just because Phoenix is going down and most likely wont be around, they will take the cup!!

Danny my son. I know you probably were not old enough to watch all those championships the oilers received. However probably the whiniest players ever in hockey to date had to be the oilers in those days. And the number one whiner was none other than the Gretz. Whoa back there oilers fan. Let me finish. All players as great as the gretz had good reason to whine, as they were constant targets of double teaming cheap shot etc etc.Crosby is having the same fun and presently the number one whiner in the league. It has to do with skill and wanting to win the game in which the oiler are sorely lacking in both departments.

As a Habs fan, I feel that if we were going to talk about who has won the most, my team did it. 24 baby. No one is even close. But in reality, our team is iffy. We got some good scoring, no D except Markov and our goaltending is inexperienced. Not sure as to why the Oilers media think the Canucks have nothing to be proud of. I used to live in ... See MoreVancouver (and hopefully soon again will be) and there isn't a classier organization than the Canucks. With their charity work, community involvement, and their on-hands approach to accepting social media and using it to boost their profile with their fans. There is no better organization. The Canucks have been pioneers with community relations, heads and shoulders above the rest of the league. Stick that in your fact drawer, Dan Tencer.

BoooHooo Dan, way to make us Oiler fans look like whiners of the whiners. I wish Rexall place had the amount of passion Hab, Canucks and Flames have. Our fanbase lacks the hardcore passion other teams seem to have, day in day out. I've been to 15 Home games this year and let me tell you, our "fans" in Rexall is no different from fans watching the PGA tour.

stop living in the past. saying you won some stanley cups back in the day, which should get you proper respect, is like saying you won a tricycle race in the 1st grade, no one cares and it doesn't matter today. what matters is how the canucks and oilers play today, this season, because its the only one that counts right now. and you sir, and you're oiler fans, would be up in arms as well, so don't pretend like "its a canucks thing" because its universal, so stop acting like a child. I don't see you calling out montreal fans, and they think their the kings of the world with all their cups! I think you're bitter because of the standings or one game against you team. get over it, its just a game.

"@big bad bry, Tencer makes negative comments about the Canucks, so you insult Edmonton as a city. Typical Canucks fan, wouldn't expect anything less." Some dumb Canuck fan flashes a green light in Kiprusoff's eyes, so Mr. Tencer insults the Vancouver fan-base in general. Typical biased reporter, wouldn't expect anything less. If this isn't a case of generalization, I don't know what is.

Oilers top point getter is Penner and has 43points , the next up is Gagner with 30. I can see he has gotten lots of canuck fans mad but just becasue he has a different opnion doesn't mean we have to become uncilvized and swear he is just venting his frustration on the canucks. I think the canucks are an awesome team and kesler should kick ladd's butt next time

Dumb. So if you haven't won a Stanley Cup you can be screwed over the refs? Didn't realize that was a criteria. At least I don't live in Edmonton.

Seemen twins? That doesnt make any sense? Its sedin twins... Thats not immature? Hank is FIRST in NHL scoring... Still think theyre sisters... Mhmmm... And someone said the canucks would suck if we didnt have luongo? If we didnt have luongo, we'd take that $6million or so and buy a goalie. What was the point of saying that? Youre just jelous. If a team cqnt have its stars? Whats the point!?! Sure take crosby away, malkin, fleury, theyd suck too. Whats your point?

Dan, the fact that you have to quote Damien Cox in order to support your argument says it all. BTW, I heard Alex Burrows interviewed after the Oilers-Canucks game and his comments were very respectful and complimentary toward the Oilers for their hard work and the effort they had put in. You might have mentioned that in your diatribe.
