Teddy Bear

Today is the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley in 1977.  I was camping with my family in Campbell River, BC when I heard he was gone.  Even now, it evokes the memory of my grade seven music teacher.  He had played us a lot of Beethoven while trying to grow some music appreciation, but when Elvis hit the Ed Sullivan Show it was all over.  Forget Beethoven.  It was recess, when one of the girls brought out a little record player and a crowd gathered around to hear Elvis.  In the next music class Mr. Francis showed us the Elvis record he had just purchased.  He propped it up on his desk, and smashed it with a hammer.  He told us this Elvis was a flash in the pan and that in six months we’d never hear of Elvis again, unlike Beethoven and Mozart, he said, whose music ...
