As the Quebec provincial election heats up, the Parti Quebecois is playing the Francophone card. Citing the perceived decline in the use of French in Quebec, the PQ is promising, among other things, more language police. They would go around inspecting billboards and storefronts looking for violators who have the dreaded English in bigger print than French, or maybe first on the sign, or whatever it is that will supposedly contribute to the downward spiral of communicating in French. The PQ would also change the laws about the use of French in the workplace. At the moment, French is required for businesses with 50 or more employees; the PQ would drop that number to 10. And how will they monitor that? Will there be assembly line listening posts, or will they send spies in to engage the boss in English? Silly me, I thought Canada had two official languages. I ...
