What Public Trust?

Before this week, you may not have heard of Allaudin Merali, Alberta Health financial officer.  He became a household name when we heard he was “stepping down” after it came to light that while he was at Capital Health, you and I paid for everything from his car repairs to expensive meals, more than a third of a million dollars worth.  When the Health Authority realized these revelations put Merali (and them) in a difficult position they knew he had to leave to maintain the public trust.  Here’s a news flash for the people spinning this – when you let someone go with a big severance in a case like this – there is no public trust left.  That Sheila Weatherill, who signed off on these extravagant expenses is also leaving, helps somewhat, but the taxpayer’s money is gone forever.  If the rules were different back when this happened, and ...
