The government of Manitoba says Chief Natural Resources Officers will no longer be referred to as “chiefs”. The Deputy Minister of Conservation, Fred Meier, says from now on, instead of “chiefs” they will be called Regional Field Supervisors. And, why is that? Meier says his department works with a lot of aboriginal communities, and he wants to show respect. Really? Did the First Nations people ask for this, or is it just a well-meaning attempt at political correctness? My callers tell me aboriginals make no claim to the word “chief”, and see others use it as a sign of respect. Now the question is, how far does this politically correct road go?
