The Supreme Court of Canada is thinking over yet another interesting case. It involves a terrible blemish on our society, the battered wife. In this case the woman tried to hire a hit man to kill her abusive husband. The supposed killer-for-hire turned out to be an undercover Mountie, and she was charged with counseling to commit murder. The lower courts ruled she was under duress, and what the Supreme Court is being asked to decide is if hiring a hit man actually falls under duress. We’ve heard the cases where a woman fears for her life and kills her husband, sometimes while he is sleeping. Can a fearful wife hire a hit man to do it for her?
