Opposition Politicians
Posted 11/1/2012 4:40:00 AM

It must be tough to be a member of an opposition political party.  They can stand in question period and display their self-righteous indignation to no avail.  It might help if they spoke as calm, reasonable people.  Their grandstanding just has the government and the public brushing them off.  The calls I get about opposition rants often describe them as a bunch of whiners and poor losers.  Some of their ideas are legitimate.  I agree with the provincial opposition when they say the whistleblower legislation does not go far enough.  By not allowing those who know where all the skeletons are buried to come forward with evidence now, it does appear they are not protecting the whistleblower, but shielding the government from the whistleblower.  On the other hand, we’ve got the federal opposition parties voting against a new bill making it illegal to cover your face during a riot, carrying up to a 10 year penalty.  Can they not see the public wants these cowards exposed?  Yet the NDP and the Liberals voted against.  Are they in favor of anonymously torching police cars?  Talk about a loss of opposition credibility.  They say the police have enough tools in the box to deal with rioters already.  Let me know what you think.

Oh goody, another unenforced law on the books, all so politicians can slap themselves on the back saying look at us go. This should be right up there with the ever present security cameras, stop anything? no, but we got a picture of the girl getting stabbed. What we need, is our govt. to enforce laws that are on the books, not create new ones as a knee jerk reaction to criminal activity. Hows Vancouver working, as far as serious time for the rioters? Or moronto? What I'd rather have our uberlords watch would have been the mugger squirming on the ground after getting hit by a tazer, or a lead pill, one FOILED crime, one safe citizen, one dirt bag dealt with. The positive spin on this and this is for the politicos, criminals would think twice about their actions, if there were a consequence.

Bob replies: So, you are discounting the arrests made from surveillance videos?

It seems in the last twenty years the opposition has gone from criticizing to outright childhood temper tantrums just to get noticed. I always thought people in government were supposed to be civil and to "debate" issues civilly. Have you ever watched a question period in parliament. All it consists of is one opposition member after the other, getting up and yelling at the government like a bunch of spoiled 10 year old's that aren't getting their way. It sort of makes a guy not really care what the say after a while. This vote on the masks is another reason I will never vote liberal or NDP.

Perhaps someone can explain why being a part of a violent protest, causing thousands of dollars in damages on the low end, and who knows how many people are hurt (with luck they are only hurt), and they may get a slap on the wrist. Yet cover their face, and they may face 10 years in prison.

Plus, what's the point of such a stupid law? They get arrested, and they get unmasked. They get a $500,000 fine and 6 months in jail for... blowing up a shop in a riot. Yet they get another 10 years in prison because they did it while wearing a mask.

And what about other crimes like robbery, rape or burglary that often involves a mask? Are they going to get another 10 for simply wearing a mask? What should the prosecution focus on? Nailing them for the crimes they committed, or that they committed the crimes while wearing a mask?

And let's say you were in a riot and all you did was slap a cop like what Zha Zha Gabor did back in 89 where she got 3 days of jail for that. Do you add 10 years for wearing a mask?

Bob replies: I think the idea is that if they can't wear a mask, they won't go near the riot. It's called preventive policing.

The tool that the police are lacking is having a court with the will to do its job. Perhaps a law pointing out that if a criminal is freed and returns to crime then those freeing him is to be dealt with as one giving aid to the criminal???

"a new bill making it illegal to cover your face during a riot, carrying up to a 10 year penalty."
What's the big deal! Our freakness fearless government leaders air their faces, in plain view, on the news TV shows everyday,...with their silver twisted tongues spewing out their spin verbage everyday,...and have any of them been arrested or let alone been prosecuted for any of their crimes???

Bob replies: Now that's just nasty.

@Senator George It wasn't as "nasty" as the one I sent you Bob....which you "did not" post,...I see!
Protecting the little darlings from getting their thieving little hearts and feelings hurt, Bob???

Bob replies: No protecting myself from a lawsuit. I do not post actionable comments. You're a better writer than to have to resort to that.

@Senator George Yes, but sadly very true Bob! I'm waiting for the handcuffs to come out over the Tory donation fiasco currently being investigated. The silver tongue spin doctors are working overtime right now to figure out how they're going to 'splain this one to the voting public.

Bob, it is a rum game, as it used to be called.

Some speak calmly, but members of the audience want the envelope pushed, so that the sizzle overtakes the steak.

How many who want histrionics, or hysterics, know about this quote from Teddy Roosevelt: http://www.theodore-roosevelt.com/trsorbonnespeech.html

For I don't see anywhere in that part of that speech, where getting excited is the top priority.

This law is just plain silly for several reasons.
    http://parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Language=E&Mode=1&DocId=5804538&File=24#1

    1. Participating in a riot carries a sentence no to exceed two years (Section 65 of Criminal Code)
    http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/page-23.html#docCont

    2. Unlawful assemblies are peaceful by definition. These would include a range of activities. http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/page-22.html#docCont

So, wearing a Wayne Gretzky mask during a Stanley Cup celebration, or a gas mask during an Occupy or Tea Party protest carry a maximum penalty of five years, but participating in a riot only carries a sentence of five????

Don't kid yourself. This is about silencing democratic protest.

Hi Bob....As for the opposition parties voting against a bill that would make it illegal to cover one's faces during a riot, I wonder if they would feel the same way about an armed gunman covering his face if he was about to commit a felony, and possibly a murder to get away with their crime....Who in their right mind would vote against this....Oh yeah...Politicians...I have been in the Autobody/Automotive industry for more than 30 years....And let me say this...You can NEVER have enough tools in your tool box....Police included...This is why I do not vote....
