Friday Mailbag
Posted 10/26/2012 1:12:00 AM

It’s Friday – let’s have a look in the mailbag.  About drug testing construction workers, Professor twiggy tweets it’s better to have employees who smoke pot after work, than crack heads on the job.  Rick says the union privacy argument doesn’t work – firefighters don’t knock on the door of a burning house.  About doing private business on a company computer, Gail was happy to see this time the accused is going to trial, she's seen too many cases where a police slip-up let someone slip away.  About bullying, Ben points out not one of the people who bullied teens who then shot students at school has ever been held accountable. And, I got a surprising number of comments from adults who get bullied by supervisors at work.  Should we put pictures of diseased people on packages of fatty, sugary foods?  Paul wants to know who gets to decide what is junk food.  Several letters ask why we don’t put pictures of deadly traffic collisions on bottles of alcohol.  Russell says they should put pictures of sick people on junk food only if they put good looking people on supposedly healthy food.  “Oh wait,” he says, “They already do.  Let me know what you think and have a great week-end.

I heard your news cast of Oct. 26/12 a.m. that mentioned the new warranty for homes to protect consumers. Thought you may find it intersting to know that have just discovered under the Alberta building code if you construct a basic office building where people work 9 to 5 and go home you must be 15 ft from your closest neighbour and have a 2 hour burn rate on the sidewalls of your building. In residential subdivision the distance is 9 ft. and there no burn rate requirements. This is where are babies sleep. I think the government may have their priorities mixed up.

Bob replies: I think you're right.

Hi Bob...regarding building codes for residential buildings. The Fire Department is active with the home builders with changes to building codes to ensure both the safety of occupants and first responders. The reluctance to incorporate these safety standards is from the builders. The more a home costs affects the number of people that can qualify for a mortgage. The builders have recently been mandated to change their building codes. Building material with a greater fire rating, smaller windows between homes and other changes have been negotiated to ensure safety to the personnel and occupants that are affected by an emergency. Construction materials are one factor, another is the response time for first responders and safety education for occupants. When building codes, emergency response times and public education are good then our chances for survival are great.
