The Arena Chess Game
Posted 10/19/2012 4:55:00 AM

It’s Friday, let’s have a look in the mailbag.  About the movement in 3 U-S states to regulate and tax marijuana, some point out it’s less deadly than alcohol. Others say in that case, legalize heroin, because fewer people also die from that than liquor.  Many letters from people who were bullied:  One parent says if the school won’t respond, involve the police.  Bob says he was bullied until he decided to drop his books and fight back, and then he was never bothered again.  Bill says school staff are overworked and don’t have time to deal with bullies.  And, there are letters from those with emotional scars from what happened at school.  About the arena situation, Richard doesn’t care if we have a downtown arena, but if we must, he’d rather the city build it and keep the revenue.  Lorne says it’s like a big chess match, with the city and Katz as the kings, taxpayers as pawns and sportswriters as bishops.  And Larry says we talk about spending hundreds of millions on an arena, while not fixing flood-prone overpasses or a litany of other civic problems.  He says we’re shopping for candy instead of something nutritious.  Let me know what you think.

Horray for city hall. They finally grew some and came to a decision that isn't going to cost us a manure pile full of money. Their next decision should be if they really want a new arena, and it is going to cost us that manure pile full of money that Katz should not be involved and it should be a city project.
    Just my opinion.

One that does not care if there is a new arena, It makes sense to me for the city to proceed with the idea I heard on the radio this AM. 1) build the new arena but not necessarily in the chosen spot 2) sell the city owned property that Rexall now stands on and use the monies to cover some of the costs of the new arena 3) have Northlands continue managing the new arena. Keep Katz out of our pockets.

This is just a way to get Northlands back in. If Katz builds the arena he would have to compete with Northlands and Rexal Place. Create a non-compete agreement and then Katz would have a better chanse of making money without the extra cash.

Bob replies: How is that fair to Northlands?

@Ken Northlands is primarily a public orgasnization even though it is run at an arms length from the city government. Where a private organization can do something it should be given preference over public. An example would be CHED and CBC. CBC should only do what private radio can not. So yes, based on that argument Northlands should step aside even if it is not good for Northlands.

Bob replies: You're comparing apples and oranges. Northlands has 100 years of experience in running arenas, and I don't know what you think CBC can do that the rest of us can't.

@Ken Northlands may have 100 years experience running arenas, but (in my opinion) not very well. I think there are two ways to go here.
A: Let Katz build his own arena, then he can run it and compete freely on the market.
B: The city builds the arena and then either lets Northlands run it, or, better yet, put it up for tender. Let experienced arena operators bid against each other for the priviledge of running the arena.
