The California Solution
Posted 9/27/2012 4:42:00 AM

Did you hear about the man who got a ticket for allegedly doing 127 across the High Level Bridge?  Not some dumb kid; this guy’s 35.  Did you hear about the racer near Innisfail breaking 200 on the highway?  Do they not realize the danger they put the rest of us in?  At that speed, any little thing that goes wrong can make you lose control.  Police are warning that exceeding the speed limit by 50 K means a court appearance and a fine and demerits but that doesn’t seem to be having much effect.  Police are asking for permission to seize the cars.  Maybe we need to take a lesson from Rialto, California, east of L.A.  Police there have a history of getting a court order to seize and crush the cars of serious speeders, while they watch.

You might ask, why not auction the cars and give the money to charity?  Police tell Fox News it has much more effect when speeders watch the cars they love so much get flattened, and that it’s much more of a deterrent.  Is it worth a try here?  Let me know what you think.

It is dangerous to do the speed limit in Edmonton but it is not all driver fault, Someone needs to do something about signage. I have been on the Anthony Henday and passed one construction sign only. One mile later I do not know if I am in a construction zone but if I don't go 100 like everyone else I could get rear ended and die. Signage is terrible, I have seen signs directing traffic into the wrong lane, signs that are confusing, and too many stretches of roads where you have to guess. Most recently, coming back from the Raceway there is a sign indicating 50 up ahead, then a sign for 60, then a sign for 50 (but at least there is a sign! Take your chances and pay the money.

Crushing the cars sounds like a good way to get the attention of some of these speed freaks that are on the roads. To the person that says that auctioning them off would be better, they should realize that there is a fairly good price given for scrap metal these days. Instead of giving the money to charity they could maybe hire more police for the traffic division.

Have to agree with Kate to a certain degree. However, this does not nothing to stop this madness. We read in this mornings paper about a motorcyclist who is dead because of speeding. Crushing vehicles might just be a good start,as well as putting the offenders name in a data bank so they can never buy another vehicle. It is high time that this has to stop.

Not only should the vehicle be crushed... The idiot driver should be the one to push the button that starts the machine.

I agree with Kate, the signage at construction sites on our roads is lacking, Badly. They do not want to tell us where the const. site ends. So City lay down some rules for the Const. Companys. or have the City place the correct signage.
As for traveling the posted speed limits, it is dangerus.

It might seem a little cruel but possibly the police should leave the odd driver in the vehicle while its being crushed. It may save some poor induvidual's life if the driver is allowed to drive again.?

Bob replies: Read on - you're not the only one suggesting that.

My "Alberta Solution" would be to increase enforcement patrols by raising the fines for speeding yet again, markedly, to help cover enforcement costs. Furthermore, if the offense results in court appearance and conviction, the vehicle should be impounded for 90 days at the offender's expense.

Firstly, let me say that I am no angel and received speeding tickets in the past and, yes guilty as charged, though mainly at police fishing holes. It's not just the complete lack of respect for the safety of others, but the complete and utter disregard for noise bylaws (whatever happened to that initiative). I live very close to a main road artery, one that is chock full of red light and speeding cameras. This entire road has turned into one big raceway where street punks spend the night speeding and screaming between intersections. So crush the cars and motorcycles and while your at it, tazer the offender's testes so they can't procreate

I am totally in agreement that something has to be done with the extreme speeders but before any action is taken against the vehicle they are driving, the police must make sure that the vehicle belongs to the speeder in question. If the driver is using someone else's vehicle, that other person should not be punished by having their vehicle either taken away or destroyed. Major fines like $10,000 or higher and jail time would be a far better deterent. The driver is the one breaking the law and they are the one that should be punished, not some innocent person who was nice enough to lend the driver their vehicle.

Bob replies: Or stupid enough. But what if these super speeders just trade cars to avoid losing them if they get caught? Now, where's th deterrance?

A friend of mine and I were crossing the street over to the entrance of Edmonton Center East when a "crotch rocket" (lime green) rounded the corner to the east end of the block and fired up, full bore to get to the next corner. We were in the middle of the block.
My friend, who is deaf, did not hear or see him coming at us (2 seconds) and I grabbed him and held him back as the "crotch rocketeer" zoomed right past us at about 90 mph,...just to slam on the brakes a second later to stop for the next corner light. Then rammed it again, around the corner, all the while, you could hear the roar of his mosquito engine, echoing off the buildings,...and then he was gone!
Later that hour,...I was back in my apartment,...and watching the 6:00 Global news about a "crotch rocket" that had crashed into a bridge on Groat road bridge, just about 5:15 pm. It was a lime green "crotch rocket"....and the "crotch rocketeer" had died in the mishap. It was the same guy who almost ran us down a few minutes before downtown!
I thought to myself,..."Right on!"....at least he was finally off the road and only killed himself! Cold! You better believe it,...but what other reaction should I have had? I later told my friend about the crash,...and that it was the same guy (he lip reads) and all he did was laugh and give 2 thumbs up!
These bikes should be banned in Canada,...they have no redeemable value to transportation. If they want to race them,....go down to the racetrack,...but they wouldn't. You have to obey the "rules" at the racetrack!!!

@Bob $ stupidty can not be banned, its not the vehicle, its the driver of the car, truck or bike

Hi Bob...Kate is right,it is very frustrating when you do not have the correct signage or no signage to inform traffic. Excessive speeders should have their vehicle crushed and if they cause a death they should be in the vehicle when it is crushed.
  12. MikeP_9938 posted on 09/27/2012 05:35 PM
Maybe they(manufacturers) should make cars or trucks incapable of anything over 150 km/per hour

So if they crush the cars in LA for speeders, why don't we take the cars of drunk drivers and crush theirs? Genius right?

I am in favor of the auction idea, but give the money to the victims unit, instead of charity. My husband was a HD rider until a neglective driver hit him. It has been said in the m/c commuinity for many years these "crotch rockets" should be banned. It is unforunate that someone has lost their life because of stupidy again! I wholly agree with Kate regarding signage. Tavelling the Henday today, there were a few large trucks travelling in the outside lane, I was in the inside lane. Where I thought there might be a speed change, if there was one, I could not see it because the signs are only on the outside area. I have noticed this on the Yellowhead also. The construction signs are joke! They are put up and maybe there is constuction or maybe the work was completed a week or so ago and no-one has been around to take the signs down. Guessing game. Try coming in from the airport the first time ........ good luck with that signage! It is said time and again there needs to be changes. Speeds quoted in your article need to have serious consequences .......... banned from driving for three years, something that counts!

As always my question to you is ... how can emergency personnel exceed the speed limit an text safely and yet you chastise the proletariat for going even 101 kM/Hr? or are you just panering to the idiots for ratings? so much for the fourth estate ....

Bob replies: Pandering to idiots for ratings? Yup, that's me, all right....

Signage in general is the problem.
As well as the non-synchronized lights at the LRT/ road crossings.
Not to mention the pedestians who cross against the lights.
Or the bicycles on the sidewalk.
ON THAT NOTE; why don't the bycycle riders get tickets for not obeying traffic laws? Thats a cash cow if I ever saw one
