Manhattan Memories

On this eleventh anniversary of what we call 9-11 I have some fresh memories of Manhattan. I was there two weeks ago to see the Freedom Tower rising from the site of the attacks. I took a harbor cruise out to the Statue of Liberty, in one of the boats used to evacuate people from the area after the towers came down. Those people could not go home for six months. One of the more visible reminders of that awful day was the high security. Entering the Empire State Building is like boarding an airplane; empty your pockets and take off your jacket and belt. On Washington’s Capitol Hill it was even tighter. Foreign tourists who could not read the warning signs were refused admittance, until they either drank that bottle of water or threw it away before submitting to security. Also, have you seen the machine (pictured on the right) that blows puffs of air into your hair and more puffs pat down your clothing while guards watch? Stay behind the white line until you’re called. It was good to know there was some degree of safety. It was sad to know it took a terrorist attack to get our attention. Let me know what you think.
