38 Special
Posted 8/14/2012 4:57:00 AM

A quarter century ago we used to get regular reports of flying saucers or UFO’s or whatever you want to call them.  People all over the world could describe them with many details and would talk about the flashing colored lights.  Then, those reports stopped and it was assumed these UFO’s (if they ever existed) had gone to some other galaxy.  Then, someone pointed out the reports stopped coming in about the same time when cell phones with cameras got popular.  I remembered people had always said, “If I only had a camera, I’d have a picture of that spaceship.”  As a newsman, I kept a camera in my car, in case I should see one.  Now fast forward to yesterday afternoon and that shooting downtown.  There were many witnesses.  One said he even looked into the eyes of the shooter.  Did anyone get a picture or a video of the killer or even of the black SUV as it left the scene?  There are those in this city who fight the idea of police cameras monitoring the streets in case of events like this, but they can’t stop the individual.  Maybe if you hear gunshots and you’re in a safe place, your hand could go to your hip, not for a 38 pistol, but for 38 pixels. Let me know what you think.

    Dear Bob,

Take a picture? Sounds like a good way to get the attention of the killer and get shot yourself. Me? I would maybe take a picture of the getaway SUV, but sure wouldn't want to attract the attention of an armed killer unless I too was armed for self defense. Of course Canadians are legislated away from any means of self defense and killers know it.

Bob replies: That's why I said "If you're in a safe place."

@Earl What's a safe place? We've heard about lots of people who have been killed here and other places getting hit by stray bullets. To me, a safe place is behind and/ or inside, a big thick truck or car, heading in the other direction!

For me,..it's all about PIZZA,...Bob! I remember being a witness to a crime by several individuals just about 3 blocks from where this crime took place on Jasper Ave. while working on a jobsite with my men. We even got involved as a liquor store owner was being attacked by some Arab men, from their black Lincoln. They caught 2 of them and they were charged, but not after about a year of crap law. I had to take time off from my business about 4 times and each of those times, I and the other witnesses sat there outside the court waiting to be called, only to be told things were delayed to another time, in fact one of the Arabs had skipped the country and didn't show back up for a year.
What has PIZZA got to do with it? The Crown prosecutor had promised us, that because of all of us waiting all morning and possibly the afternoon, he would have PIZZA ordered in for the witnesses. NO PIZZA,...NO conviction,...NO criminal conviction! NO APOLOGY EITHER!!!!
And the real kick in the nuts!!! The guy who came back a year later, after me sitting there again,...THE ONLY ONE WITNESS sitting there again,...because the prosecutor didn't phone me to tell not to appear,...the guy pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and I didn't need to appear. When I asked him why he didn't phone me,...he said he couldn't find my phone number,....I said:" Well you phoned me, when you wanted me here, but couldn't bother to phone me to NOT appear,...kiss my ***!!!!
Would I want to get involved again,...probably not,...not for that CRAP!!!

@Bob $ We hear you Bob $..... Most the of frustration in the court system stems from the inept treatment that witnesses and victims get from the Crown prosecutors in these cases. Some of them are just plain heartless and have left their places in humanity for some kind of pseudo-humanity!

Well,...just from the news videos I have seen Global and Sun,...eyewitness accounts have identified black guys getting into a black, shiny, Range Rover,...how many of those vehicles do you think there are in Edmonton, or even Alberta.
Start there folks,...and because prohibited weapons are supposed to be registered (tongue in cheek)...these criminals I am sure will just give themselves up!!!

Bob replies: CHED and iNews reported the Range Rover before they did.

I would imagine Bob,..that the witnesses to this event were probably RUNNING FOR THEIR LIVES,..and weren't really thinking about stopping to get NEWS photographs and videos!!!
"As a newsman, I kept a camera in my car, in case I should see one."
Judging from the world that we are living in now, compared to the 50's and 60's,...how do you know that you hadn't been kidnapped....and have been living in a "parallel universe"...and you aren't really here,...do-do-do-dooo,....do-do-do-doooo!

Bob replies: Some of the witnesses were up on balconies looking down.

Well, it doesn't appear that these criminals are TOO BRIGHT, does it Bob? Who pulls off an execution, on a public street, in the middle of the afternoon, in a well populated neighborhood, under the bright white SUNSHINE, in a big, shiny, Range Rover SUV,..not expecting to get caught,....TOTAL IDIOTS!!! But then again,...they are probably thinking,...so we go to jail,...for what,... 3-4 weeks....who cares!!!

Bob, even if you actually taped the event and followed the person home with two cops, a judge and jury walking along with you it is likely to see the criminal would get less time than it would have taken you to do all this. Furthermore, the justice system would likely charge you for being a busy body.

I remember, twice, being a witness to a hit and run, and a gasoline theft ring, stealing gas from cars...both in the nighttime! Both vehicles speeding away from the scene!
I, because of my job, had trained myself to read up to 4 letters and 8 numbers at a glance, together...and remember them! (train clerk for the railway).
This allowed the police to meet the criminals, at their home, before "they" even got there!
Problem though today,...these criminals will steal their get-a-way vehicles and license plates on them before they even get there to do their deeds,..so you will be tracking air. That is not them. That might even be the case here as well. Stolen vehicle,...stolen plates,..stolen ID's,...fake Gucci shoes,...fake Shaquile runners,..well, you get the pictures!

Even if you looked at the shooter in the eyes and he looked back, would he instantly know who you are? Or even where you lived? Even on Facebook it would be a game of chance for the shooter to find you. Unless the media does something stupid and display EVERYTHING about the witness.

What I find funny is how people say having cameras in public, repeat PUBLIC, areas is an invasion of privacy, even though dozens are seeing, AND listening, to you.

And there's Vic Toews who says Facebook is an invasion of privacy, yet he wanted to legalize illegal computer hacking.

Cameras in private area, of course I say no. But these are public areas, and the camera is a better eyewitness. Get more police to wear spy cameras like on that TV show Police POV, and increase chances if conviction.

And regarding UFOs, here is what I find hilarious. Carl Sagan said extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Yet when skeptics say, "it might be....", "it could be....", "it's probably...". Yet not only their explanations can be equally far fetched, but they seem to think they don't require any real proof their claims.

Not to mention skeptics say investigators who write books on the phenomenon are only in it for the money. And where was one of the claims made? Skeptic Magazine.

Why not reach for the .38, or 9mm, or .40? Thirty plus years of Liberal social engineering has us believing that we are not supposed to protect ourselves or someone else who's life is in peril. Properly trained "civilians" can and have stopped tragedies because they were armed. These incidents are rarely reported by Liberal media who go by the mantra, "if it bleeds it leads" in their reporting.
My wife and I both have extensive training and are legally allowed to carry a concealed firearm in several US states after having gone through the requisite FBI background checks etc. We are aliens down there but are deemed competent and qualified. Something our own country fails to recognize. Check with the National Firearms Association and you might be surprised how many incidents have been resolved "in this country" by civilians who were armed.

Bob, you had me at 38 special.

With all these shootings going on, I'd feel a hell of a lot safer with the pistol instead of a cell phone. Only people carrying guns are the criminals committing these crimes.

I've got no idea what the victim's background is, rest his soul, but if he was a law abiding citizen and was legally allowed to carry a handgun, this tragic story would have certainly ended up differenty.

Our current gun laws put honest citizens at a serious disadvantage and make them easy prey for the dirtbags out there who have no respect for our current laws.

The only solution I see is to allow concealed carry handguns for properly trained law abiding citizens.

Has it come to the point in our city where we can't have a disagreement without fear of being shot? Seems to me we should reinstitute capital punishment for cases like the Joey Jasper murderer. This fellow is obviously too stupid to use his words so he's too stupid to be reformed. Even Forrest knew, "Stupid is as stupid does."
