Your Thoughts
Posted 7/20/2012 4:08:00 AM

It’s Friday, time for your thoughts on the stories of the week.  About the arena/entertainment complex being $35 million over budget and the mayor telling us not to worry about nickels and dimes, Bob writes to ask if maybe the mayor would like to throw in some of his own nickels and dimes.  About the provincial computer servers being down for days after fire water sprinklers got them all wet, many calls from people like Michel asking if no one has heard of Halon fire suppression technology.  About police going after the 100 worst drivers, Bill says it’s long overdue.  Cheryl wonders if they’ll arrest these guys, only to have a judge put them right back on the street.  Carmen says the $80,000 city parade balloon was a waste of money.  With all the wires across downtown streets, Carmen saw more scraping along the pavement than flying.  About the city looking at parking meters that can charge you more at certain times, Joy says driving is a privilege; and parking is a privilege for the well-to-do.  Tracy says the city would take the coins off the eyes of a dead man if they thought it was another revenue stream.  Let me know what you think and have a great week-end.

Went to the parade yesterday morning and waited with anticipation for this new Edmonton Float.

Here are some of my observations/concerns with it.
What is it supposed to be? We recognized the Muttard building and some northern lights but what else was it??
Did no one know that there are wires across the road every 100m, so that the balloon was never able to fly but only scrape on the street?
Will this scrapping damage the balloon and our $80,000 will burst out?

Thanks Mayor Mandel for wasting some more of our money.

@Carmen Apparently the balloon is in the shop today for repairs.

"The balloon was designed by Edmonton's Artsmith Communications and built by Fabulous Inflatables of Windsor, Ont., in three months."

Well, the question I have is....why the Mayor and the Council did not use an Edmonton basesd company to build this balloon.
There are at least 3 companies in Edmonton that are more than qualified to build this "IN" Edmonton.
Much like the Olympics and other venues that have gone outside of the areas that they want to collect TAXES from businesses in their area,...they DO NOT do business with them in getting memorabilia and structures like this from LOCAL businesses. If it is one of the reasons I folded up my business in Edmonton,...attitudes like this!!!

Mayor Mandell,...you should be ashamed of yourself for making this kind of decision. Shame on you!!!

Did the same designers work on the art museum as well,...because both designs look STUPID!

I really think that the City purchasers of this balloon should have sprinkled a few hundred "special" cigarettes along the parade route in advance,...so that the rest of us could have participated and envisioned just what this balloon was supposed to represent,..as they did when they purchased it. Laughable,...very laughable!!!
