Pearl Harbour?
Posted 7/17/2012 3:55:00 AM

You heard last week how a fire in Calgary’s Shaw building holding lots of important servers knocked out several radio stations and took down government computer services.  It caused problems for hospitals scheduling surgeries and affected Vital Statistics and corporate registries and land titles and motor vehicles and financial records, even 911 calls.  People were calling me about delayed vacations, because they needed a license for their new trailer.  Some callers ask if having all of this communications equipment in one building is a good plan.  Maybe not the best comparison, but one old soldier with a resulting delayed medical procedure said it reminded him of Pearl Harbor, with all the assets in one place.  Of course, this was a computer port, and thankfully, there was no loss of life or even injuries in the fire.  Things are now back to normal; all services restored.  Now, Alberta's Information and Privacy Commissioner, Jill Clayton will investigate.  The law requires personal and health information to be kept secure.  And, in the end, that's what we all want.  Let me know what you think.

I like Hank's quote from yesterday,...I think it really applies here!
"If people can fail and still get paid, there's no incentive to change or do better."

I foresee it becoming more expensive to store data, because back up systems are not cost-free.

It would not be prohibitively expensive to have a fire proof room with physical backup hard drives - the room could even be off site but still secure through CC wiring.

Be prepared for more of this as "Cloud Computing" becomes the norm. I prefer to keep my important stuff on my own hard drive, with a backup on a flash drive instead of trusting some server farm to keep it safe. In this age of fear, you'd think an installation like this would be considered a high-risk terrorist target.
