The government of Manitoba says Chief Natural Resources Officers will no longer be referred to as “chiefs”. The Deputy Minister of Conservation, Fred Meier, says from now on, instead of “chiefs” they will be called Regional Field Supervisors. And, why is that? Meier says his department works with a lot of aboriginal communities, and he wants to show respect. Really? Did the First Nations people ask for this, or is it just a well-meaning attempt at political correctness? My callers tell me aboriginals make no claim to the word “chief”, and see others use it as a sign of respect. Now the question is, how far does this politically correct road go? Eileen tweets, what does the Navy do about the Chief Petty Officer. Angry Edmontonian tweets, “What of all the Chief Executive Officers in Manitoba? Tom wonders if Manitoba fire chiefs will now be known as the Top Fire Dude? Of course, that, in itself would be politically incorrect, Tom. It would have to be Top Fire Person. I wonder if the Manitoba newspapers reporting this have an Editor-in-Chief? Let me know what you think about the situation-in-chief.
