No Zeros Needed
Posted 6/14/2012 1:34:00 AM

We’ve been talking for days about the Ross Shep No Zero policy and the sense of entitlement it may be engendering among some of today’s youth.  Some think it may also be part of the mindset of Quebec students, marching against tuition hikes, when they have the lowest in the country.  The other side of the youth coin is bright and shiny.  Youth who apply themselves have a world of opportunity. Some become valued employees.  Some open their own successful businesses.  I asked a young employee to come into my office and set up a Twitter account for me, and show me how to use it.  Others are so adept at social media they can sway an election.  The brightest and the best are still becoming professionals, and it may be one of the new generation with a lab coat and a desire to succeed that discovers the cure for cancer or diabetes.  It is a shame that those who toil diligently behind the scenes do not always get the same attention as those who flout the system.  As we watch in amazement the advances of the new generation, maybe they can teach us something about recognition, as well.  Let me know what you think.

This issue is easily solved. Instead of giving students who do not finish assignments a zero give them a 1 - a grade commensurate with the effort they have put into the assignment. Satisfies the school requirements and sends the same message.

Several schools have stopped public acknowledgement of students who have done well because they become the target of bullying and ridicule. My child's school is one of them. Instead of handing out "Honours" certificates at an assembly, these certificates are now quietly placed in an envelope with their report cards. Citizenship awards and other acknowledgements have been dropped completely. I felt very sad because, to me, this policy meant the bully's have won.

Bob replies: Really? I have not heard that. Tell me the name of the school. This is wrong.

@Lynn Maybe we should stop running scores for football, soccer, and all athletic events. Too stressful for the ones who didn't achieve a better place for themselves. We could stop posting values for the stock market and on and on....this world is really getting screwed up!

Well Bob, lets be honest about it. What story would you run - a cat that saves it's owners life in florida - or a surgeon at the Mazinkowski who has transplanted 100 hearts? I get sick of hearing stories from the USA. This is Canada.

Be the change you want to see :)

Bob replies: And we have done heart transplant stories and some special stories about the Maz and the people who work there.

Another Commentary from an Albertan complaining about "Entitlement" among the youth, with a swipe at student protests in Quebec thrown in for good measure. I am not quite a youth anymore, but in my life I have never had anyone explain how we Albertans could possibly complain about entitlement? WE have the single largest entitlement program in Canada: oil and gas royalties. Most Albertans did exactly nothing to deserve these monies, and yet we enjoy the lowest tax rates in the country. We should be saving and investing our royalties, not blowing it all on a permanent tax holiday. Jesus had a word for this behaviour: Hypocrite.

Getting something for doing nothing - The Alberta Government Committee on Entitlements, Senators, MPs who don't attend chambers or parliament ... Sense of entitlement - an MP who takes $1000 limousine rides, commandeering a 100 million dollar helicopter for a fishing trip, getting an almost free, unbelievably generous pension after only 6 years ... Crying wolf - Raj Sherman and his Doctor Harassment claim, NDP leader Mulcair and well you know ... reminds of the cigarette package warning about children copying what they see adults doing ...

When one takes a close look at some of those who are sitting on the school board , it becomes very apparent why they do not want a system where one receives zero's for doing nothing!

Put another way, we can either curse the darkness, or light a candle, or thank those who light candles.

@David W. Lincoln I praise the ones who MAKE candles David....Bob Layton being one of them.
Where would we express our true grumblings that sometimes even make it to his TV editorial. My MP has been my MP for over 8 years,...and I NEVER hear from him. Ever!!!

We should experiment. We should follow one student from elementary school all the way to his/her profession. Give them a 100% score all the way through their education. Encourage them to a university degree and give the a 100% score all the way through. Then, when those who imposed the no zero policy require urgent medical attention, present our " No Zero Graduate" to perform the procedure required, but advise the patient of their product.
