Zombie Town
Posted 6/11/2012 1:48:00 AM

Is anything happening in the strike at the Hardisty nursing home?  We see the ads slamming the owners.  We see the people picketing.  Are new clients still moving into the place?  This strike is affecting a group of people you may never have thought of: People who live in the vicinity of this institution.  They no longer have the quiet enjoyment of their homes.  The problem is the drivers who one resident says honk like maniacs in support of the strikers.  I’m hearing about noise from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening.  That means no nap, no relaxation, no break.  Some work the night shifts and walk around like zombies for lack of sleep.  Children are getting agitated.  Pets are running wild or hiding.  That’s what I’m being told.  One asks, “How long will this go on?”  He’d like to follow a driver home and then honk outside his house for twelve hours and see how he likes it, but he’s afraid he’d end up sitting in the back of a police car.  So often, strikes affect people on the perimeter who do not deserve the aggravation.  Maybe if we just wave instead of honking. Let me know what you think.

I wonder how strikers feel when they see those TV spots. Part of their strike pay is going to pay for those spots. I know I would be asking questions of the union heads.

Bob, I am sure there is a connection between the picketing workers, and the Tim Horton's referred to here: http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/30/money-losing-tim-hortons-in-st-johns-hospital-a-cautionary-tale-critics/

There is such a thing as over-paying.

Bob replies: I don't get the connection. AUPE says Alberta health gives the place money for the workers.

@David W. Lincoln I don't get the connection either David. Time to go to decaf, David.
I am sure that workers of every profession would be willing to accept less money, as soon as the cost of everything goes down. The ones who keep the prices inflated for gasoline, natural gas, electrical, food costs, transportation, taxes on taxes on taxes on taxes,...is the GOVERNMENTS, at all levels,...THE GOVERNMENTS. Don't expect that to change soon or EVER!

@David W. Lincoln Bob, I have a sneaking suspicion that those on strike make more, for doing the same thing, than others not working in old folks homes.

It comes down largely to economics, and I say, "Good Luck, you're gonna need it" to AUPE, when they attempt to counter http://www.econlib.org/library/Enc/bios/Ricardo.html and the link to monetarism.

I think consideration for others has taken a back seat to the over-blown sense of entitlement most people believe is their right when expressing themselves. Then, conversely, do I not have the right to peace and quiet in my own home?

Perhaps a police presence would cut back on the amount of people honking - or simply a sign that says "We respect our neighbors - please wave instead of honking"

I'm wondering if the residents are suffering - who's helping them? Anyone? It would be nice to have a report of what's going on inside. Are management doing the work? I sure hope so because it sounds like they don't appreciate the workers and the good they do.

    Bob,

I am very annoyed with CHED today. Just before 4:30 a supposed breaking news report interrupted Bryan Hall's sports. I thought there was REAL breaking news but it was the hockey news conference previously announced for 4:30. I don't think it was appropriate to use a breaking news report.

If Park Place is receiving money, as indicated by the workers, to keep wages at par,...and they are NOT, then it is time for an audit of the entire organization by a forensic auditor to see if there are indiscretions going on here. If there is taxpayer money involved,...open up the books,...I know I want to see them. That is what the Freedom of Information act is for.

Bob replies: It has yet to be shown if those allegations are true.
