Your Thoughts
Posted 5/25/2012 1:51:00 AM

It’s Friday and time for your thoughts.  About changing the name of our annual fair, no matter what, Carla will always refer to it as Klondike Days.  John tweets, “Me too.”  About the royal visit, Katie tweets, “What exactly is it they do?”  Adam is bored with the royal tree planting, but Bill says without the tradition, we would soon forget our own history.  Richard wants to know how much the royal visit cost, but Paul says the expense is made up for with increased economic activity surrounding the event.  About the signs of a stroke, Tanya spent all day in emerg. They thought she was on drugs.  She wasn’t.  A neurologist just passing by pointed out the stroke and maybe saved her life.  About the sexually disgraced Mountie transferred to BC, Dave points out we will pay for his move.  Canadian Chipper says RCMP overtime will make up for his two week suspension.  Lil says his supposed punishment is a very bad joke.  Sue and Pamela want to know why he wasn’t fired.  And, D Oz tweets to ask how a man who beheads someone gets time away from the mental hospital, even with an escort.  Let me know what you think.

About smoking, why is it that smokers have more rights than non smokers, they take time off for a cigarette smoke 5 or more times a day while the non smokers are working, smokers are forcing non smokers to get sick by forcing the second hand smoke to be inhaled by being allowed to smoke while walking on the streets, smoking outside their balcony and sharing the smoke with their non-smoking neighbors? Why is it that the government is not regulating the chemicals added into cigarette that makes it more addictive? (Addiction creates a problem that needs a solution and creates a job and a new product for a new business??)

We should not toll to twin hwy 63. We Should get back the taxes paid to the Federal government from the earnings of the people who work and earn their income here then claim in another privince. Then take back the balance from the transfer payments. This alone will pay for the project in one fiscal tax year.

The new EI rules are generating a lot of discussion so I will relate a little story that will show it's not always so black and white. My daughter, to her surprise, ended up among the ranks of the jobless in Halifax some years back. She immediately filed for EI as well as registered with a temp agency. Her job search took a lot of time and effort and yielded nothing. Some months passed and the temp agency started placing her in short term positions. EI filled in the gaps. Many months later the temp agency placed her full time in a high profile "off site" government office that required a certain skill set when dealing with protocol and the public. After many months of taking home what was basically minimum wage (after the agency took their cut) she was given the opportunity to apply for her position on a permanent basis. She was successful in that application. Later she went on to apply for a higher level position in that same office and was successful in that endeavor as well. It's five years later and my daughter loves her job and excels at it. If the new EI rules were in place then, she would have been forced in to a job at Tim Hortons or McDonalds with little opportunity to dig herself out. EI bought her the time for the agency to get to know her and trust her. Things are not always black and white and whenever I hear discussions on EI it is her face I see, not that of the lowest common denominator.

What do the Royals do, was raised by Katie. In a short answer, they are a source of unity instead of division, for isn't politics about division?

Plus, do we really need more politicians?

@David W. Lincoln Yes David,...politics is about division.....It is about dividing and separating all of your money into little batches and then separating it from the rightful owner,..."YOU".

Isn't it nice to know that a high ranking sargeant in the RCMP
K-Division just got demoted for his drinking & sexual behavior?
It's nice to know that someone that enforces the law, fails to follow
the law! What a good example to set for everyone-DO AS I SAY,
DON'T DO AS I DO. So are the RCMP or city Police above the law now?

The worst part of the situation, is that he gets to keep his career
and his pension...BUT he gets shipped off to BC. I don't feel that him getting demoted
one rank & 10 days without pay suffices--yet ANOTHER
    slap on the wrist!

I think I'll go to Hawrelak Park, start a big bonfire, throw a huge
party and become drunk and disorderly. WHAT? I can't do that?
Why not? I THOUGHT THAT RULES WERE MEANT TO BE BROKEN??

personally feel that the individual responsible for the utterly horrific act on the Greyhound bus which took the life of an innocent man and traumatized, for life, every single person on the bus that night, along with the general public who are aware of this act, should not, under any circumstances, ever be allowed off the premises of any institution where he may be held. I understand that he has a mental illness, and I can appreciate that he may not have been criminally responsible, according to the laws of our country; however, his condition and the act that was a result of his condition put the general public at risk, and the rights and safety of the general public must outweigh the rights of this individual, not to mention the rights of the family of the victim of his act, and the rights of the individuals who are forever scarred because they were forced to witness it.

On smoking. The constant attention given to anti-smoking is interesting in its frequency. I have never heard of domestic violence caused by smoking. Now alcohol has caused irreparable damage to families and whole communities and the constant carnage on our streets. Then there are the disturbing numbers of increased obesity caused by the innumerable fast food outlets. I wonder which of these costs our health care system the most? I also wonder why the government allows the tobacco companies to increase the chemicals they add to cigarettes with apparent impunity. Could it be the taxes they collect?

Bob replies: There is no doubt gov'ts are addicted to taxes like people are addicted to nicotine.

Mr.Katz is really quite shrewd when you think about it. If the city had agreed to his latest demand for an annual $6,000,000.00 operational subsidy he could have serviced the debt he would have taken on for his portion of the capital required to build the new arena and essentially build the arena on the backs of the taxpayers while he gets the revenue from the ticket sales, leases, concessions etc.. A sweet deal if he can get it, and shame on you if he does Edmonton.
