Mending Political Fences
Posted 5/24/2012 1:06:00 AM

You heard right after the provincial election about how it affected 81 year old Henry Kozak.  Living in Clareview, he’d put up a Conservative sign on his fence.  Some politically insecure not-smart tore it down and damaged his fence in the process.  Intelligent political debate is one thing; vandalism shows you have no confident argument.   At 81, and on a fixed income, Henry did not have the money to get the concrete caps on his brick columns repaired, and he’s not strong enough to do the work himself.  I suggested in my editorial that the area Conservatives might like to get involved, and Thomas Lukaszuk’s office called Henry to say they’d be there for him.  Henry got someone to repair the fence and the $270 dollar bill was covered.  So, the fence is now restored despite the poor losers and the Conservatives are back in office despite the poor pollsters and we’d like to think everything is back to normal.  Henry wonders what to do next time.  Should he put up another sign or try to appear neutral?  Too bad it’s illegal to electrify a sign.  Let me know what you think he should do..

    Remember that 9/11 commercial? It's where on a neighbourhood block only had a few American flags. After 9/11, each house now has a flag.

    If he lets the vandals get to him and not show his support, the vandals win meaning they successfully struck terror into Henry.

    It took 17 years, but those who spoke out against Ralph Klein won because he left office due to low confidence from his own party.

    Though not exactly from The Merchant Of Venice, never say die.

    Well Bob, it may be illegal to intentionally electrify a sign, but what if he illuminated the sign and didn't do a very good job. 81 years old, 240volts - mistakes happen.

      @Richard I was in the sign business for 25 years....we don't use 240 volts much anymore....low DC voltage LED lighting....made in China....DOOOAh!

    It seems to me this says more about the vandals, than about Henry.

    Why not this: Going to such lengths over an election is an example of going overboard. Life is about more than who is elected to debate and pass laws. Until more people are more balanced, those out of balance will have too much clout.

    Bob replies: So, you're saying these vandals are unbalanced?

      @David W. Lincoln Short answer - yes. They have too many eggs in the basket labelled "law
      making".
