Your Thoughts
Posted 5/18/2012 4:01:00 AM

It’s Friday – time for your thoughts.  About getting employees home safely from a party, Lori tweets her company used a group raising money for a skateboard park as volunteer drivers.  The Lamont Business Association tweets they also use volunteers.  Martin Equipment has someone at the door making sure everyone is safe to drive.  About construction speeders, Clinton tweets they should have to work as a flag person while people speed past them.  About helping the Food Bank, Gloria wants to stop people she knows who falsely use it.  Wizzard longs for the day food banks are no longer needed.  Bob wonders about a country where prostitution is legal but responsible gun owners get harassed.  About EI changes, John says there's no shame in an honest day’s work – good for Jim Flaherty.  Mark thinks the unemployed should have to move to get a job, as long as they’re not a caregiver.  John points out government employees have to take whatever job is offered or be laid off.  About juries not being allowed to hear all the evidence, some blame the judge, some blame the laws the judge is given to work with.  And about the Capital Ex name change, Sherwood Park Appetite says X no longer marks the spot.  Let me know what you think the new name should be, below.

Has Bob (not you) been to Navada?

What John doesn't to realize is that many on EI were laid off from an honest day's work.

I should know, EI was 3 months behind on my first payment. And every time I tried calling them when I demanded to know what's going on, I either got a message that said their office was closed or they couldn't redirect my call because of the high traffic volume and it hangs up on me. They didn't even give me an option for me to leave a number.

And after 8 months I finally landed a job after so much searching and spewing out literally tonnes of emails and not having to put up with jobs during that time that have an abusive attitude problem.

My father-in-law is still waiting for his first payment for the past 7 months because he was forced into retirement for health issues. When we were able to get a hold of them or go straight to their office, he kept getting 10 different answers from 3 different sources.

And his brother is on medical leave, EI lost his record of employment.

Congratulations Jim Flaherty, you have proven what common sense has proven over the past 6 years. YOU SUCK!!!

    Dear Mr Layton,

Perhaps they could call the exhibition "White Elephant Days" to celebrate the incredibly ugly building that looks like it has Elephantiasis (Art Gallery) or the LRT that no one rides. Or perhaps the driving of businesses away because of extremely high taxes needed for all the "social engineering" instead of infrastructure engineering. Or the planned destruction of Edmonton's most unique and valuable asset, the City Center Airport, which is about to be turned into a high priced slum as the vibrant businesses are driven out and the lifeline to them no longer exists.

During my working life I always geared my monthly expenditures to what I would receive if the worst case scenario happened. How much I would receive on EI. It was after all a safety net that I paid in to for all my working life. If the worst case had materialized and I found myself compelled to take a job outside my field at a lower rate of pay than EI provided it would have been an unmitigated disaster. Sure the EI system has it's problems but one does not throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's one thing to plant trees or drive a cab as a student, it's yet another when one has an established life with responsibilities. In that instance, not all jobs are good jobs.

I couldn't agree more with Mr Flaherty ... and the government will no doubt lead the way by removing their unearned pensions ... after all when they are voted out of office they can still gain employment (no longer required to say suitable) in the abundant beverage or food service industries. So Mr. Flaherty ... remove parliamentary pensions and join the work force with the rest of us peons when the electorate sends you to the curb for asinine behaviour and moronic ideas ...

Re: Edmonton Journal article, 'Nobody will miss 'Capital Ex' name.

Bob, How did we ever get into this mess? You and I are old enough to remember the Edmonton Exhibition (Agricultural Theme) or the Klondike Theme (Klondike Days). With the Capital Ex Theme I think that we are now at the bottom of the barrel and nowhere to go but UP.

Remember 6 years ago Northlands conducted a Survey in the first year of Capital Ex. The problem is Northlands is a closed shop.
Do we need a new name OR do we need a new theme? Where are the movers & shakers like the late Leo Leclerc who was a passionate promoter for Edmonton and the Founder of Klondike Days? Edmonton is THE Transportation Hub for all of Western Canada and the Gateway to the North in Oil Country. The name could be related to Transportation or the Oil Industry. And, what about constructing a permanent observation deck Tower on the Northland's Site to compete with the new downtown developments.

Bob! Bilderberg once denied their very existence. The Washington Post called those of us who exposed the Bilderberg group crazy conspiracy theorists because, supposedly, the group was non-existent, but because we were not in fact crazy and it did in fact exsist, Bilderberg has come out into the open. To hide now would be ludicrous, much like your live rant, denying the dubious nature of the meetings. Truthers have done their research and it is painfully obvious that you have not! or that you spin the propaganda purposely. Redford is a UN operative and she will push Agenda 21! LOOK IT UP! AGENDA 21!

Bob replies: And I suppose the sky is falling?
