Brothers and Sisters

How many times have you heard, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk,” or something like that?  Police are concerned that despite all of the reminders, we still have drunks on the road.  They ask you to report them.  At various functions I see the efforts companies make to keep their people safe.  Some ask the DJ to announce there are cab chits.  You decide if you want one and then you have to go find the person who has them.  Some hire a police officer to just watch people leave.  The best I’ve seen was at the annual retirement party CUPE Local 30 put on last week-end.  It was a big event.  There were city councilors and MLAs on the guest list.  They had a cash bar, which helps a lot, and the union had a woman standing at the door, all night, with a pad of taxi chits.  She approached people who were leaving.  With a big smile she offered a cab ride home, whether they appeared to need one or not.  This is the most pro-active I have ever seen.  I’m thinking the union must believe Brothers and Sisters don’t let Brothers and Sisters drive drunk.  Could this be the basis of a new campaign?  Let me know how your organization keeps people safe, after a party.

The company I work for doesn't have parties with alcohol. Our Tow Truck drivers need to stay sober to haul the vehicles of those who drink and drive into the impound yard. We make really good money off stupid people, but it's business we'd really rather not have.
If you REALLY need your vehicle at home in the morning, we'll gladly tow it home for you. It's more expensive than a cab, but a helluvalot cheaper than the impound fees. (Not to mention all the costs involved in an impaired charge.)

I had a boss who bought a contract with a local cab company for the office Christmas party. The contract was for round trips so people didn't have to take their own vehicle to the party, totally removing the urge to drink and drive, and eliminating the worry of leaving your vehicle at the party.

The round trip contract was advertised as part of the Christmas party and the chits were handed out with the tickets.

    It worked fantastic.

@Dianne Corbett When I was driving taxi, one New Years Eve, a local lounge hired me for the entire night to drive their guests to and from as required. (All they had to do was show me their ticket which had my number on it.) They also collected donations for the local women's shelter from those who wished to pay something for the rides.) I was actually surprised how few used me, even though I was sitting in the lounge drinking coffee the entire night, so no-one would even have to wait when they wanted to leave.

@Dianne Corbett Common sense, pre-trip planning and clear headed thinking....go figure?!?!?
But won't work in Calgary....there is such a shortage of cabs there you would wait days for them to come and pick you up,....going and coming!
