When you see the not-smarts rioting and breaking windows and setting fire to vehicles and jumping on the roofs of cars, don’t you just wish you could reach right into the TV and arrest them?  What has always bothered me is that these goofballs like to cover their faces.  They’re making mayhem with arms held high as if to be conquering heroes, except with their faces hidden they look more cowardly than courageous.  Now, standing on the edge of the outrage is Member of Parliament Blake Richards, from Airdrie.  He’s offering a private member’s bill called the Concealment of Identity Act.  It would make it an offence under the Criminal Code to wear a mask or disguise while taking part in a riot, with up to five years in prison or a five thousand dollar fine.  Richards highlights something most people are concerned about, for once, not putting the rights of the criminal ahead of law-abiding citizens.  This law would give police another opportunity to arrest and reveal them.  Private member’s bills are not always supported.  Let your MP know this one should be. Let me know what you think.

Anyone who wears a mask to commit a crime shows intent.

In other words, if you wear a mask for a riot, you are not simply spontaneously unleashing your anger through violence, but you are intended to destroy property and hurt people, AKA terrorism.

But here is the problem I have with the bill. If you rob a bank while wearing a mask, it's the law's job to find who you are and nail your ass very hard. By rioting which you knowingly and willingly destroy property and hurt innocent people, you committed a violent crime. Meaning mask or no mask, you need to be identified and nailed for it.

So why write a bill that's already the law's job?

@Robert I think they should also include in this law that all bank and store robbers who wear masks during the course of committing their crimes should immediately be arrested,....????....and should turn themselves in immediately!!!
That for sure will stop them from robbing the bank or the store of their choice!!!

I'm all for it. In fairness then all the police will be identifiable as well right? Seems to me the people that wanted to press charges against the police at the infamous G-20 had a very hard time identifiying the cops that assaulted them due to face sheilds and the removal of name tags....what's good for the goose......eh Bob?

@Allen You beat me too it Allen! There were many incidences where the police at the G20 took this as an ideal opportunity to practice their "beating and torture tactics" unhindered and unidentifiable on the unmasked crowd and the vulnerable. There are many, many pictures of the police beating down on people sitting down, wearing no masks, and carrying NO weapons. Many of these were women in shorts and tank tops. BIG men,...BIG men!

I agree with the MP from Airdrie; these Cowards should be put in Prison and also have to pay a Fine, plus paying for the Damages.
Some Lawyer or Judge will probably find a way to let them go free or find another Loophole. The Law does not protect the normal taxpaying Citizens, this has been proven time and time again.

@Max "Taxpaying" has nothing to do with it Max,...The law today doesn't appear to be protecting "any" people in Canada this day!

Speeding is an epidemic in this province and accepted as part of the boomtown mentality.
The speeders that were caught on the weekend highway 63 blitz or a normal weekend blitz on highway 2 ,where thousands of speeding tickets are issued are the tip of the iceberg.
Yesterday on highway 830 police had radar set up to catch speeders on a school bus route/subdivision in the country and the vehicle behind me was flashing its lights to warn oncoming speeders to beware and slow down. Speeders protecting there own.

I say triple fines ,increase demerits and ban radar detectors .Speed kills.

Just what the justice system needs is another law that the judges can dummy down. Lets see, if you were wearing a mask and did all these bad things ... did you really mean to... no, well ok then do not do it again. Ten dollar fine!

    YUP just what we need

How about this Jim? Set up radar traps on "one" side of the highway ONLY,...every 10-20 miles on Friday afternoon,...heading south.
I would bet my last buck that anyone caught speeding at any one of the first few speed traps,..will get nailed again at one of the next sets of speed traps,....and since I now have nothing left to bet with,....they will get nailed on the next set of speed traps.
That could be 2-4 times on the same route.....
Have this co-ordinated with a central communications vehicle,...whereby if the vehicle is stopped speeding again the fine is doubled or tripled right there,...and so on and so on..
Maybe the dumb ******* might,....just might get the idea!
Then on Sunday of the same week-end,...you have the traps set-up in the other direction. The revenue generated could be enormous and look at the bright side,....you could get the real idiots OFF the road finally!
There is a LIMIT on what they can chaulk up in fines before they say enough is enough and SLOW DOWN!!!

This is one of the smartest private member's bill EVER! Along with that we need to make the 'rioter' or his guardian(if under age) pay the monetary cost of the damage. (as well as the conviction fines, etc.) I am an elementary school teacher and am apalled at the damage caused by some young students because parents/guardians have no leadership/control over them. This would be a very good wakeup call for families and the responsibilities they have. I have seen these youngsters do willful damage and say... "Who cares!". THIS HAS TO STOP! When students do damage in schools, why should the taxpayer pay - shouldn't it be the person who damages it???
