Women's Disappearing Rights
Posted 5/1/2012 1:06:00 AM

We’ve just been through a provincial election that raised the specter of what some considered racism and what others considered intolerance against a specific group.  Still, we got to vote and choose a government and the legislature will continue to operate, hopefully, with a more effective opposition than we’ve had in the past.  Imagine if you were living in Egypt, and had demonstrated for months to get rid of the government leaders.  They finally leave. The military takes over but then they don’t want to give up power.  Then, the Islamist-dominated parliament suggests removing gains made by women.  They’re reportedly planning to take away a woman’s right to an education and employment.  They want to lower the age to marry to 14.  They want to take away a woman’s right to divorce without being road-blocked by her husband.  Egypt’s National Council for women is begging the parliament not to do it.  Despite the Alberta electioneering, we didn’t have to deal with anything like that.  Of course, they don’t have to deal with the robo-callers.  Let me know what you think, below.

Human rights are in a terrible state in many countries - women's rights are usually the last in line. And yet in Canada, we feel so lucky. In comparison we are on many levels. However, we need to be constantly vigilante. The Harper Government is slowly eroding these rights behind the scenes. How many people are aware of the following:
    1. The Pay Equity Act has now been dissolved.
    2. Budget was cut to the Status of Women and Equality has been removed from their mandate. Their new mandate is:"to coordinate policy with respect to the status of women and administer related programs" (1976).
    3. The Court Challenges program has been cancelled. Now if there is an issue with women's rights, it will be up to the woman to fund her court by herself.
    4. Abortion was left out of the G8 funding - bad day if you are a Congo rape victim.
    5. Universal Day Care was cancelled and replaced with a taxable $100 monthly which is a drop in the bucket when daycare can cost about $1000 and staying home can cost even more.
    6. Not many people remember the fight to have women included in the Charter of Rights - there was even comments to the group in parliament about "next thing we will have to put in rights for children". The Harper government was silent at the 30 year anniversary because they considered the charter "divisive".

Yeah it is good to be in Canada but the fight never stops.

Not to mention, look what we left behind in Libya and Afghanistan.
