Sauce For The Goose
Posted 4/26/2012 2:06:00 AM

From time to time, someone calls me and tells me something that just doesn’t seem right.  I’m just not sure if it could be true.  I start phoning around for confirmation.  This is one of those days.  I got a call telling me that there are doctors and dentists and psychologists in this city, who charge you anywhere from $50 to $175 if you don’t show up for an appointment, or if you don’t give them 24 hours  notice if you have to cancel.  I understand these professionals make their money one appointment at a time, and maybe this is a reasonable response to a recurring problem, I’ve just never heard of it before.  So, here’s my issue: How many times do you go to your doctor for a 2 o’clock appointment and actually get in at 2 o’clock.  Ever had to sit and look at the Reader’s Digest for 2 hours.  What’s your time worth?  What if you wait and wait and then you’re told the doctor’s been called away to the hospital and you’ll have to re-book?  You took time off work.  Again, what’s your time worth?  Should you be invoicing the doctor?  How does that saying go about sauce for the goose?  Let me know your experience below.

That sounds like the money for nothing scandal if you ask me. Getting paid for no work being done.

I had the same problem with Telus. We tried to set up a land line with them when we moved in October and hadn't heard anything from them. It wasn't until we got a bill and cancellation notice of our land line that we found out they set up our land line, and are still charging us for services they failed to tell us we had.

It's bad enough we have the horror stories from Holmes on Homes where contractors takes a lean out on your home or demanding money for doing such a crappy job.

For doctors or anyone in the medical profession doing that, do we go to the BBB or someone else to report them?

We live 45 minutes from the doctor and sometimes there are delays due to traffic. One time we were running late, just 5 minutes. I phoned the office and the person I talked to said that there was no problem. We got there and found out they took the next person and they cancelled our appointment. I told them that I phoned and they said it was no problem. I explained that we came from out of town and we made that trip just for that. There was no apologize for the mix up and just wanted to book another appoinment. We never did get that appointment because the doctor cancelled. I can understand if we lived in town and to cancel our appointment but we live out of town and I phoned too. The longest I have waited for a booked doctor's appointment is 3 hours and that is with 2 little kids.

I don't know if my doctor charges for missed appointments since I've never missed one but I have heard of it happening. I've been late arriving for appointments but never more than about 10 minutes. Regarding the delays in waiting to see my doctor, I suppose I should consider myself lucky because in the 20 years I've been seeing mine the longest I've ever had to wait is 20 minutes. Typically I arrive a few minutes early and I'm in an examination room within 10 minutes.

How about getting charged $200 for a referral later that was a week late?

In my doctors offices there are signs posted stating that any missed appointments will be charged at double the rate of ongoing appointment charges which I believe are $35.00 for a 13 second appointment....
I think that this appointment charge for missed appointments are because Granny and Grampa Grimm are using these doctors offices as social gathering centers and if they decide to not attend their appointment because they have to go for coffee with Gene and Betty, then so what....
What I object to,...is having to book an appointment to get a copy of some of my medical records....this actually happened,...they wanted me to book an appointment to get a photocopy of some of my medical records for some coverage and wouldn't allow me to get them any other way......how often do you think this happens and helps to clog the health care system, not to mention inflating the costs of the health care system....I think lots.

You're not using your imagination folks......feign passing out in your chair,....you will get immediate attention,...your doctor will come rushing out to attend to you, at your chair....of course,...it only works 2-3 times!!!! (Just kidding Bob)

    Dear Bob:
Same thing happened with my wife yesterday. She has a appointment with a doctor in downtown at 2:30 pm. and doctor showed up at 7:45 pm. He took my wife at 8:30 pm. after 6:00 hrs. And this is just to discuss report for 10 minutes. He told my wife that "report is normal & I don't know what is the problem?" My wife came at 10:00 pm by bus. She spent 8:00 hrs to hear "I don't know." Another thing doctor's receptionist didn't allow to use their phone to my wife to call me at home. Me and my daughter were too much stressed out until she came at home. My wife took off from her work & loose the money, waste 8:00 hrs. to hear "I don't know." Sometime we have doubt on their professionalism. Doctor's receptionist can call their patients if their is some possibility of too much delay or can discuss on the phone about reports if there is no problem or everything is normal. By doing this they can save time of doctor and patients too.
    Thanks for your time.

    V.B.
