The Other Election
Posted 4/18/2012 1:48:00 AM

Today, we’re talking about the other election, for Senators in waiting.   Several emails from people asking what that is all about.  Ernest and Sonia suggest the government and media is keeping it a secret.  Grace just wants to know who these people are and what they do, besides put signs in boulevards.  On Monday, we’ll vote for three nominees to represent Alberta in the Senate.  When an opening comes up, the Prime Minister has the opportunity choose one of the three, maybe the one with the most votes.  No other province provides this.  There are 13 candidates.  Some have party ties and some are independent.  You’ll have to decide which is better.  As for what they plan to do for Alberta, you can find their names and platforms simply by Googling Alberta and election and senators.  Does the Senate even matter?  The Canada West Foundation website explains a properly designed Senate balances the majority rule of the House of Commons with minority rights and regional interests provided by Senators.  Of course, for any of this to work, we need more than the usual 40% voter turn-out.  Again, it’s all up to you.

Bob, as long as people in areas of lower population density have more pessimism than confidence that folks in areas of higher population density are interested in balancing the best interests of all, there is a palpable need for the Senate.

So, what do the Senate Candidates have to say about an oil pipeline to Eastern Canada?

@David W. Lincoln You'll know David, as soon as Stephen Harper gives them their opinion!

So if this Senate is so valuable, how come it is not needed in Provincial or Municipal politics? Maybe the more local the government the more likely we elect people capable of "Sober FIRST thought"? Besides, how can the Senate be in ANY way impartial when they owe their jobs to the Prime Minister alone? Senate needs to go, and I will only vote for senatorial candidates that promise to NEVER attend or vote on anything. (Since there are none, I declined my Senate ballot.)
