The Drinking Game
Posted 4/13/2012 1:55:00 AM

It’s Friday – let’s have a look in the email and Twitter feed.  With the debate over, Mike says to really stump a candidate at the door, ask what their party’s vision is for Alberta fisheries.  About my suggestion some party promise to help us all by cutting the provincial gasoline tax, Katie tweets, “Why would they make a promise we can actually see and feel.  This isn't Disneyland.  A dream is a wish your heart makes when we're fast asleep.”  So, how did you like the debate?  Jerry saw no leadership, just a lot of finger-pointing.  Voyaguer says the best line came from Danielle Smith when she said she didn’t need a judge to tell her what was right.  Evelyn wonders why no one brought up the high voltage transmission lines.  Kirk didn’t like that every time it got interesting we had to stop for a “short break”.  Gary says they were so busy trying to make themselves look good; the idea of working together to make Alberta better didn’t even come into play.  Heather says she was hammered by the time it was over, because she was playing the drinking game with Raj Sherman, every time he said “crisis”.  Have a great week-end.

    RE: Heather's comment:
Now,...that is funny,...I and my brother watched it and he commented that every time Raj spoke he should have held up a t-shirt or something to let us know who he was campaigning for. I know that he is there to promote the Liberals, but he doesn't have to hit us over the head 40 times,..could be good opposition candidate, maybe???
Alison,...you may have come out from under the shadow of your past leaders with some good intentions, but you have flip flopped just too many times in the last few weeks to show you can make firm decisions ONCE that will hold up to scrutiny MANY TIMES! The PCs have EARNED our MISTRUST and there isn't enough in your promises to change that. I still want to know if everybody from the Do Nothing committee has already paid their money back, or if they haven't,... won't...Who would vote for somebody who might wind up booted out of their own caucus from the GetGo??? Stupid!!!
GO DANIELLE GO!,...you DUN good girl!!! That trip to the Alberta Boot Company might have really helped you out! The NO experience comments were priceless. "No, I don't have experience in providing bad government!" Very cool! Good strong answers, I like the "judge" comment. We DON't have to go running to a judge every time we need something we should be able to decide, and Major clearly spelt it out in a news conference,...the Do Nothing committee was never in his decision mandate!
Brian Mason is playing it very sharp. He knows where the bear in the buckwheat sat down for a rest!!!

@Bob $ "He knows where the bear in the buckwheat sat down for a rest!!!"
Not that is funny! Good one-line writer for Danielle Smith,...not that she needs our help. She's doing just great all on her lonesome,...but she won't be alone for long! Gee! It's kind of nice to know there is still an honest talking, sincere looking, look you in the eye truth speaking kind of politician left!
Those cracks about the "Dani dollars" by Redford and Raj. Hey! That has a ring to it!....those cracks won't go over with the voters who feel exactly the way Danielle does.
These are OUR resources,...and it's about time we have a chance to share in some spendable proceeds of those resources! Quick, somebody tell Stephen!
The hurumphs and cackles are good indicators by Redford and Raj that they have forgotten that "the voters" are not just the entitled ones who voted for them from their party....they are the "Henry and Margarets" that King Ralph spoke about when he handed out the "Ralph Bucks",...and they haven't forgotten him!
And Raj,..I've been to AlaBAMA and came back here for the "Alberta Advantage"....been seeing it disappear here real quick!!!

Bob replies: The glow is on now, but after the election, how long do you think the honeymoon will last?

Hi Bob; Yesterday morning I recieved a phone call from the Wildrose telemarketer asking for my support, she was unfriendly no good morning or how are you just I am calling on behalf of the Wildrose party can we count on your support? I said I was undecided then she went on the defence the tone in her voice chanced. Wildrose you just blew it. Not a fan of telemarketers.

Good civil debate! Danielle wins hands down! Sounds truthful, for Alberta, for Alberta taxpayers, for seniors, for reasonable, educated, analysis of cutbacks and planning needed, and I for one could use the $300.00 "Danielle Dollars". For my family it could be $1200-1500.00 in 2-3 years, and I've always wanted my share of the Alberta Advantage. I'll spend it here! I'll wait!
Redford came across medium, and then got more and more stone faced as they piled on her with all the ammunition that her "party" has helped to provide in the last couple of months.
Raj came up in my opinion books, more personable, and would be a good advocate for the health care system cause he worked in it and the "Docs and staff" seem to be with him.
Brian Mason, knows he won't win majority but is happy to be the guy on the other side of the teeter totter...I would be too. Redford's 140,..then "Oh..no,..I really meant 50,..just show her desperation to keep the PC power grid intact, but Danielle's got those big wire cutters and is going to short circuit this "entitlement parties" party plans BIGTIME!
Wonder how Alison feels about suspending those Transition Payments NOW!

Bob replies: "Hands down?" Have you see the editorial in the Edmonton Journal. The CHED poll shows she won 37% to Alison's 27%.

@Newshawker You asked for MY opinion,...or was I mistaken? I'm going by what "I" saw,..not what somebody wants to tell me that I saw. Is that OK,...Bob?
And what does hands down really mean,...anyway???

Bon replies: "Hands down," dates back to the mid-19th century and harks from the world of horseracing. A jockey nearing the finish line well ahead of the competition, with victory certain, would often relax his posture and drop his hands, relaxing his hold on the reins, as his steed galloped the final few yards. To win a race "hands down," therefore, was to win it easily, without any serious competition. (Internet)

@Newshawker Edmonton Journal???? Isn't that a PC newspaper kind of thing? No, don't read it, if I can avoid it. Alison's still down by ten,...that can't be a good thing, I would think! Used to be 38-37 for Danielle....now 37-27....still better I think.

Out of 100 for each,...Danielle 95%,...Alison 40%, if her team members don't pay the money back before the election,...0%....Raj 60%,...Brian 75%.
For Premier Danielle,...for Health Care Consultant Minister (Special Appointment) Raj,...for Opposition Leader Brian,....sorry,...all other positions have been filled!!!
Is the Chinese diplomats job open yet???....where do I apply???

One comment that I liked was Danielle saying she didn't have experience bullying teachers, and others. It was Reaganesque, when the Gipper said to Walter Mondale, "I hope age doesn't become an issue, because I don't want to take advantage of my opponent's youth and inexperience".

    Have a good weekend Bob!

I was disappointed in the debate. It missed items that I wanted to hear about. Such as who is willing to start regulating the planned shutdowns of electrical generators so that the companies cannot reduce supply to increase price; why does Wildrose want to remove us from the CPP and start our own Alberta Pension Plan, if a profit based company needs to make profit - how can it SAVE the taxpayer money on long term and other health care without reducing service?
If wait times do not improve, education continues to deteriorate, and more private companies are brought into the pig trough, I will not be bought off with $300 - and neither should you.

@Kathy I think Kathy, based on your comment, that you should then accept the status quo...Your MLAs deciding their own exuberant salaries,..huge transition golden handshakes,...setting up committees for the next 4 years that DO NOTHING, never meet and get paid for it...a government that will continue to expropriate and confiscate your property because they might need it for their corporate buddies,..the same government that instituted long health care wait times and queue jumping for their buddies,..higher taxes,..deregulation and elimination of environment controls,...raping of Alberta's resources,...with NO compensation to you,...ALL the same CRAP we've had for the last 20 years, Kathy....you should cast your vote for the PCs.....just don't tell anybody you voted for them....I wouldn't!!!

@Kathy Garry, I accept your right to vote for whomever you choose. Please don't tell me who to vote for or assume I would vote PC because I (G-- Forbid) should question what the Wildrose stands for. Voters should evaluate ALL of the platforms and ALL the details in the platform and remember that there are more parties than the two Conservative parties. I will vote and it will be NDP and I will be proud of it - they at least want to do something about public health care and electricity.

    Mr. Manning's Broom
Well, the old elite have spoken. Mr. Manning wasn't going to comment on the election this time but felt compelled to because of negative attacks. How noble. I really find the sanctimonious attitude displayed by Mr. Manning revolting and offensive. There is no secret to why we've had PC governments for so long. The Getty years were very different than Lougheed's rule. Ralph Klein's reign was more different than a change of parties could ever accomplish, besides Ralph started as a Liberal. Under Stelmach, more than 30 ethnically diverse newcomers were elected to the ranks and now with Alison Redford we have an entirely new direction and new faces. The PC party has always gone through regular renewal, sometimes with anguish, but that's what has kept it there. The "principal occupant" has changed, if you haven't noticed.

For me Mr. Manning's comments reflect a desire to return to a past world, a world without the internet, without global communities, with social intolerance, without ethnic diversity and a time of much slower growth. It's an idyllic world of pastures and corrals that Mr. Manning yearns for and belongs to. Mr. Manning is definitely not talking about renewal, at least not what most would consider renewal. Rather I feel that Mr. Manning wants us to regress. His isn't a forward looking statement. The "aging process" is truly showing its effect. And I’m nearly the same age too but I find the language snobbish and insulting to all generations.
