The election is another day closer, and when I ask people if they’re going to vote this time, too often there is an excuse.  I’m really busy; maybe if we could vote on line.  Others say despite all the talk about politics, they don’t feel there’s a leader they know enough about to trust.  And, when it comes down to the individual candidates for MLA, it gets even worse.  Not only do they not know who to count on to vote for them and not just the party line, people don’t even know some of these candidates.  It’s like they just pop up when an election is called.  Do these door-knockers even live in my community? I’ve never heard of them.  It would be nice if someone I’ve come to trust at the community league or sports club or church put their name forward instead of all these strangers.  I don’t know if they’re suddenly interested in serving me, or if they just want that big paycheck.  You can’t get to know them overnight, but as for the leaders, you’ll want to catch the debate tonight on 630 ched stating at 6:30.  What they say under pressure and their over-all demeanor, could go a long way in helping you decide. Let me know what you think on my blog at 630ched.com.

    Goodmorning Robert

I read that the Prov. & Fed Gov'ts need to reduce spending. They think laying of food inspectors and civil servants will help reduce the costs. Why were they hired if not needed? Why not reduce the number of politicians by 1/2 or 2/3rds they do not represent us as they must toe the party line anyway. Only a few run the show if not the bureaucrats anyway.

    best regards

I heard a talk-back-line caller say he doubted he'd vote because none of the issues affect him. He sounded to be in his 20's and apparently health and education (if he has kids) do not affect him. Perhaps the provincial government isn't planning on using HIS tax dollars and he is maybe going to live forever and not need seniors services of any kind. But then he said if he did vote he'd just vote the way his wife is voting and she is going to vote "for that lady who said we'd get some cash'.
    **sigh**

@Sue How can the guy say none of the issues affect him. Does he not buy gas, food, utilities, pay for a mortgage or rent, buy clothes,..have a family???
I watched a news item where some Grade 9 girl students were trying to get the attention of secondary Nait like students to see if they were going to vote and they walked past them like in some kind of a daze....totally oblivious to their message.
I would have approached it differently,...making an announcement about some new i-pad thingy widget and watch them gather in droves....!!!

I only know some of them by their first name. They all wear the same kind of jacket. I only know them by mostly, their first names. Some are very openly friendly, some are very short in their demeanor, some are impossible to really get to know, because they are just cold, some make you feel that they are welcoming you to their home, with a big smile, and a friendly handshake. These I have come to know, with very little conversation, but I would vote to represent me in a political election in a heartbeat because they come across as genuine, honest, sincerely glad you're there, and make you feel like they are glad to see you again and want you to come back soon. Who are they? You're friendly neighbourhood Wal-Mart greeter!!! That sometimes is about all the chance you will get to meet your representative....sometimes that is enough.

Bob, our household will be voting as we always do, and we will be watching the debate as well. However, not very hopeful. One of the candidates who arrived at my home drove up my drive way as we live on an acreage, and instead of going right to the front door which is right on the driveway she walked all the way to the back door, knocked very quietly on the door, our dog barked or we wouldn't have known she was there, we found her trying to drop off a paper with her name on it, literally dropping it on the step! We answered the door to find her doing this and she had the audacity to announce we took our sweet time coming to the door! And she was wearing flip flops! I'm thinking shes dressed inappropriately, too stupid to figure out what the front door was as when I mentioned it to her she seemed confused. So do I actually vote for this twit? Or do I call the police and have her charged with trespassing and littering? Not too hopeful with the candidates we have out here!

@Cheryl I guess Cheryl, it won't be a surprise to you, if, after the election, you get what you always get! Talk about nit-picking!!! Did you take as much time to listen to her message as you did to write your fashion appraisal and critique as to how and why she got to your door! I hardly think so! By the way, were you wearing flip-flops when you answered the door?

@Cheryl Oh,..sorry to bother you again Cheryl,...but if the PCs get in again,...don't be too excited and surprised if they decide to expropriate some of your acreage, cause they want to run a power line, a highway, or some other kind of patronage project through your property, because you won't have any say in the matter. Bill 10, Bill 19 and Bill 50 already passed gives them that "right" and you have NO say in it. Maybe you can hit them with your flip-flop!

In my riding, I only knew one of the candidates, the Mayor we FIRED in the last election, she won the PC nomination, so it'll be anyone but her. The rest, I only knew their names from the litter they pile on our boulevards. Never seen their faces or heard what they stand for. (Other than to make a lot of money if elected.)

Now, though, I see that the independant candidate I voted for in the last federal election is running provincially. I think he's got my vote. I like him, saw him in the federal candidates forum, and I like that he ISN'T connected to any party.
Of the leaders, I'd like to see Dr. Sherman as Premier, he actually knows a bit about healthcare, and had enough guts to stand up to the PC machine when he was part of it. I also think he won the debate tonight with reasonable promises, and believable means of delivering them.
