A recent ransomware attack that has affected multiple operations around the world hasn’t hit the Alberta government.
Minister of Service Alberta Stephanie McLean said governments need to be vigilant when it comes to cyberattacks.
“We are constantly prepare for attacks, I mean there’s attacks all the time frankly on the Government of Alberta. But we’re very successful in blocking the majority of emails that come through that initiate this kind of thing.”
She said the Government of Alberta did a threat assessment in regards to the “WannaCry” ransomware.
“We determined that we were well vaccinated as it were, against this particular attack, and where we had instability issues we sent patches that are mandatory to all users. So we are well protected and secure in the government against this particular attack.”
In the past she said there have been instances were the government has had to lock down a device because of some sort of malware, but nothing significant.
McLean says the provincial government was not one of the victims of the “WannaCry” ransomware, and they’ve never paid a ransom.
