Maybe the reason it won’t go away is that we should never have thrown it out in the first place.
I’m talking about the slogan, City of Champions.
I find it very interesting that the very reasons there is talk on council about bringing those signs back, are the same reasons I and others used for keeping them in the first place.
Everyone who supported keeping the City of Champions slogan made it plain to our elected decision makers that this was not just about successful sports.
The City of Champions was more about a mindset where people help people without even being asked.
To me, in Edmonton the word “champions” is synonymous with “volunteers” who are the champions of families needing help after a natural disaster by offering their time or their talents or their treasures.
Champions make sure there’s a child’s Christmas present under the tree, and yes, you can call them champions for going out of their way and out of the country to support our champion sports teams.
The only question in my mind is whether we should put the old signs back up, or create new ones.
Let me know what you think.
