Every new family approaches birth in different ways. For some it’s a home birth, for others a water birth; for one Edmonton family, Jack Michaels and the Edmonton Oilers helped welcome their son into the world.
Sunday morning, Nikki and KC Conrad didn’t know they were about to be parents. Nikki was admitted to the hospital with high blood pressure at 33 weeks pregnant. Her blood pressure wouldn’t come down so, that afternoon, the doctors decided to induce her.
Unfortunately, that made things worse for the baby as his heart rate dropped dramatically.
Suddenly the Conrads found themselves in a room full of doctors, nurses and specialists.
It was a high stress environment and the one thing that helped everyone keep their cool was the sound of the Oilers defeating the Anaheim Ducks 7-1 on 630 CHED.
“Every time someone would come in they’d say ‘hey what’s the score?’ before they started talking about scary baby stuff,” KC told the 630 CHED Afternoon News on Wednesday. “It was kind of our calming little thing to talk about as all this chaos went on.”

Round 2 between the Oilers and Ducks hasn’t exactly been a calm process, but the Oilers’ domination Sunday night was just what JC needed.
“The Oilers knew they just needed to blow them out so they wouldn’t scare me.”
Around midnight the doctors decided Nikki would need a C-section as the baby’s heart rate still wasn’t coming down. At 1:55 a.m. little Colt came into the world weighing just 3 pounds 7 ounces.
“From a very proud new father of a new lifelong Oilers fan, thank you guys for making the scariest moments of my life so much easier,” JC said.
The newest Oilers fan Colt will join his parents JC and Nikki, and the rest of the Orange Crush, as the Oilers take on the Ducks Wednesday night in Game 7. Puck drops at 8 p.m. All the action starts live on 630 CHED at 6 p.m. with the City Ford Face-Off Show.
