The off-ice sniping continues between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks as they prepare to face each other in game four Wednesday night at Rogers Place.
On Tuesday, Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle suggested Oilers star Connor McDavid gets “white glove” treatment from the officials. Oilers head coach Todd McLellan responded after Wednesday’s morning skate.
“I was surprised. I thought we were supposed to the team whining,” said McLellan. “The ‘white glove’ part of it, I think that’s questioning the integrity of the officiating. I’m going to stay out of that and let them do that.”
“We review things that are happening, infractions that are happening on the ice. We explain to our players this is what is going on out there,” Carlyle said on Wednesday. “We think there are some situations where people have received preferential treatment.”
“It doesn’t affect me,” McDavid said. “It’s his opinion. He has the right to have that.”
Before the series, Carlyle said the Oilers would be whining about the Ducks cheating on face-offs.
The Oilers lead the series 2-1 but are coming off a lacklustre loss Sunday night, falling to the Ducks 6-3. They’ll be looking to be more physical and create opportunities off the forecheck.
“Their D skate well. A lot of it is puck placement and keeping it away from the goalie,” said winger Zack Kassian. “Sometimes we’ve been playing on our heels. If you’re reacting, you’re not going to be able to catch them.”
The Oilers expected lineup is:
Maroon – McDavid – Draisaitl
Lucic – Nugent-Hopkins – Eberle
Caggiula – Letestu – Kassian
Pouliot – Desharnais – Slepyshev
Klefbom – Larsson
Sekera – Russell
Nurse – Benning
