If the massive popularity of cat memes, pictures and videos on the internet is any indication, a cat cafe on Whyte Avenue will be extremely popular.
Fei Xie and his wife Vivian decided to open up Cat Cafe on Whyte after living in Canada for around 10 years.
He said it has been a long time coming.
“The idea came from three years ago, (the idea) for this location was from about nine-months (they decided on it),” explained Xie.
The cafe, at 10111 82 Avenue NW, is just about in the heart of Whyte Avenue and Xie expects them to be extremely busy.
“Today (Thursday) is already fully booked,” explained Xie. “What we do is a half-and-half, so it is half online booking and also we do have walk-ins as well, so there is basically limitations of 20 people per hour because they don’t want to overwhelm the cats.”
Xie said the grand opening was 10am Thursday and he expects the store to stay extremely busy because there is so much interest, even before they opened their doors.
“People can pop-in, spend an hour here and chill, forget about the pressures of work,” explained Xie. “Also, people looking to adopt a cat, it is better to check this place out and interact with the cats.”
He added, they teamed up with a local animal shelter to get the cats, which are all adoptable. Xie hopes this leads to more cat adoptions in the city.
SafeTeam, a volunteer based non-profit animal rescue, supplies the cats.
Zie explained you pay $15 for admission to the cat play area, which you can book in advance online and comes with a drink, or just pop-in to the main cafe.
The cafe also offers locally roasted coffee beans from ACE Coffee Roasters. (twd)
