At city council yesterday, Mike Nickel suggested we use that $64 million surplus to lower property taxes. The mayor called this good politics, but not good fiscal policy. If you lower them now, they just have to go up that much more next year,he argued, it is not a long term solution. Councillor Nickel argued that with 6.8% unemployment, this fund should be a rainy day fund and many people could use an umbrella right now. He didn’t get much support. In fact, I don’t think he got any. What are your thoughts?
