A CF-18 fighter jet has crashed in the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, inside Saskatchewan, not far from the Primrose Lake Evaluation Range. The pilot did not survive the crash, which took place at 11:09 Monday morning.
The Royal Canadian Air Force says military helicopter crews from 4 Wing emergency service, including 417 Combat Support Squadron, were dispatched to the area.
There is no word yet on the identity of the pilot or the cause of the incident.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan said Monday afternoon.
“It’s too preliminary to make any type of judgement, any conclusion. The best thing we can do right now is give the Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces the space to do the necessary work.” (eb, with files from Global News)
Tragically, we can confirm that the pilot did not survive the accident. The name will not be released until next of kin are notified.
