If you’ve been westbound on the Whitemud this weekend, particularly after sundown, you’ll have noticed Snow Valley has got their eleven snow making machines up and running. General manager Shawn Ballog tells Global News that she’s never seen such a late start to the season.
“This is my eights season, and we have never started this late. We’re anxious to get going. Walked into work this morning, we’re all happy and have smiles, so it’s great.”
The late start to the 2016 ski season means a lot of disappointment from staff and riders alike.
“It’s just kind of hard on morale, but everybody is anxious to get on their skis and their boards and the mountains are starting to get open. Y’know, it’s supposed to be winter, so everybody wants to get out there and enjoy the cold weather.”

You’ll see those big white plumes of snow being shot up into the sky under the lights all week. Ballog said it doesn’t take them long to make enough snow to get the facility up and running. In fact, Ballog said they should be open next weekend.
