It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Saturday night will be bright with the lights from the second annual Santa’s Parade of Lights.
Thirty floats will wind through downtown starting at 5:00 p.m. Producer Dean Heuman told Global News that’s more than they had last year.
“There will be people you haven’t seen before,” he said. “Then some of the entries are being completely redone, so what you saw last year won’t be what you see this year. We also have a couple of bands in there, so that’s new as well.”
The parade starts at Jasper Ave and 100 Street, traveling clockwise, west to 101 Street, then north to 103A Avenue, east to 99 Street, south on 99 Street and ends at Sir Winston Churchill Square. There will be family-friendly activities in the square from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“The Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree is going to come and sing Christmas carols for us, there’s fire barrels to warm up to, and food trucks to have a snack with,” Heuman said. “We hope people will come out around 4:30, enjoy the whole parade, see Santa Claus, and spend a little time with us starting their Christmas season off right.”
There will be volunteers along the route to collect kids’ letters to Santa.
Also happening Saturday night is the annual All is Bright festival. Businesses along 124 Street and High Street will be hosting activities including sleigh rides, axe throwing, live music and even photos with Santa.
Many of the local stores will have additional demonstrations and activities.
All is Bright runs from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (kb)(with files from Global News)
There are several road closures in effect through the day Saturday to accommodate both events.
The staging area on Jasper Avenue, westbound lanes, between 97 -100 Street, will be closed from 2-8 p.m. Two way traffic will be maintained on the Jasper Avenue eastbound lanes.
The parade route will cause road closures and bus detours on the following roads downtown from 4:30-6 p.m.
- Jasper Ave, westbound lanes, 100-101 Street
- 101 Street, full closure, Jasper Avenue to 103A Avenue
- 103A Avenue, eastbound lanes, 99 to 101 Street
- 99 Street, full closure, 103A Avenue to Jasper Avenue
Expect slow moving traffic between 6-8 p.m. as the parade disperses on:
- 102 Avenue, 97 to 99 Street
- 97 Street, Jasper Avenue -102 Avenue
All is Bright Festival activities will cause a full closure of Jasper Avenue from west of 123 Street, to 124 Street just south of 102 Avenue between 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. The sleigh ride route may cause short delays on 124 Street between 102-108 Avenue, in both directions between 4:30-8:30 p.m. Detour using 121 Street to 102 Avenue.
Parking along the Santa’s Parade of Lights route will be closed at 5:00 Saturday morning. Parkades in the area will be available at their usual rates.
The City of Edmonton encourages you to use ETS if possible.
Parking in the 124 Street area will be available, except on 124 Street between 102 and 108 Avenues between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
