The Eskimos held a closed practice on Thursday on The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium as they prepare for the Sunday’s Eastern Division Final in Ottawa against the REDBLACKS.
The Eskimos defense will try to close down a REDBLACKS offense the has proven to be very potent this season. The REDBLACKS rank sixth in scoring but first in average passing yards per game (343.9), second in average net yards per game (414.8), and fourth in average rushing yards per game (93.9).
The REDBLACKS haven’t had consistency at their starting quarterback position but 41 year-old Henry Burris is once again the starter as a hand injury limited him to just eight game.
Burris is once again the starting quarterback and is averaging over 300 yards passing this season and close to 400 yards in his last three starts. He also has three 1,000 yard receivers to throw to in Ernest Jackson (Eastern MOP nominee), Greg Ellingson, and Brad Sinopoli.
The REDBLACKS have struggled finding a healthy running back with last season’s starter William Powell rupturing his Achilles tendon in training camp. The REDBLACKS have used Travon Van, Nic Grigsby, and Kienan Lafrance this season. Now the feature back role is being occupied by Mossis Madu who has recorded 490 yards rushing in six starts.
“Hats off to their scouting department because the back we played in the Grey Cup last year he was pretty good,” Willis said. “That Madu guy, he’s just the same. Their backs, they’re good, they’re shifty, they catch good out of the backfield. You give them daylight and they hit the hole and run. Come Sunday we just got to make sure we’re gap disciplined and when he gets to us we got to make sure we tackle well.”
The Eskimos will hold one more practice tomorrow and then travel to Ottawa, they’ll play the REDBLACKS on Sunday in the Eastern Division Final.
Kick-off from TD Place is 11am, 630 CHED will have the pre-game show at 9:30am.
