Friday night was the Wildrose Party’s Annual General Meeting in Red Deer. Brian Jean was invited to the stage by MLA Leela Sharon Aheer to deliver his keynote address.
In it he railed against the NDP, the carbon tax, education reform, hospital parking fees, a sluggish Alberta healthcare system, crime, prostitution and drugs while riling his support base, calling on Albertans to vote Wildrose come 2019.
Perhaps most of all he underscored the Wildrose call to reevaluate Canada’s equalization system.
“Between 2007 and 2014 Alberta, Albertans sent $190 billion more to Ottawa than came back to Alberta. A hundred and ninety billion! And what have we got in return? Sewage dumping mayors in Montreal attacking pipelines.”
Jean said he believes that Alberta is a fair and compassionate neighbor but said he will, “never put up with an equalization system that’s ripped off Albertans for decades.”
If he becomes Premier in 2019 Jean said he’d lay waste to many policies enacted by the NDP.
“We need to attract the very best and the brightest across Alberta to help us fix, and rip up, the disastrous policies the NDP put into place so far and will put into place in the next two years, and we will rip them up and take them away.”
Jean specifically said he’d rip up the carbon tax, but did not use the word, ‘repeal,’ while describing it as the largest tax grab in Alberta history.
He would go on to call out the NDP for raising, “almost every single user’s fee in the book, tax increases on individuals, on business, on beer, on trains and on just about everything else you can possibly think of.”
In his 32 minute speech Jean promised to never stop fighting for all Albertans as he pounded away at an under-performing “Health Bureaucracy,” that cares, “more for dollars spent than people cured.”
As for changes to education Jean said the Wildrose, “would not be silent when we saw moves to limit choice in education and bureaucrats bringing in new educational fads that started treating our children like guinea pigs in the classroom.”
As a sort of counter to Jason Kenney’s hopes to consolidate Alberta’s small c conservatives Jean made an overture beginning with a cautionary tale over a second quote, “socialist term,”
“It’s too great of a threat not to open the door to Conservative friends who remain in the PC party. Don’t ever forget, friends, it is Wildrose that led the charge to bring all conservatives together in Alberta.”
Alberta will head to the polls before May 31st 2019.
